Play by Post is a creative experience system designed in 1989 by Juan Gonzalez. The post-and-response system features participants assuming the roles of fictional literary characters as they write chapters of a never-ending novel. Play by Post soon became an addictive medium for artists, musicians, and wrtiers throughout the world to share their ideas and participate in role playing games that would feature their handiwork. Mr. Gonzalez's flagship game, Aelyria, took the Internet by storm and in 1996 was recognized as the pioneer of the Play by Post system. While numerous smaller imitator games and communities, Play by Post LLC, the company, has established a foundation for setting standards and continues to revolutionize the platform.

Founded in 1989, the company has seen more than a million registered players through the Web, Usenet, and Prodigy. In 1993, we began publishing our games and services on publicly accessible Usenet newsgroups, and in 1995 we launched our first web sites. By 1997, our flagship community, Aelyria, was featured among other cool sites on MSNBC's then-popular cable television Internet culture show, The Site.
