The forest was close around the tree, it was one of those wilder parts of the forest where it resented outsiders, even those of the elven city. The pact that had been made between elf and forest allowed the elves a great deal of freedom compared to other strangers who might attempt to enter the forest, yet still the forest resented the two legged ones, not really understanding that there were different races and considering them all axe wielding tree murderers if they thought they could get away with it.
The trail behind the tree seemed to have been a game trail, perhaps a route in for the fruit that the strange wolf seemed to enjoy. The trail led down a slope and the undergrowth on either side was tall and thorny, spiked briars that reached out to catch the elfs clothing as he moved with caution down the trail. Caution? Even a human would sense the resentment of the forest along that trail, a darker, sinister part of the forest indeed.
