The hovering, almost unreal image of the cavern ceiling beneath the warlord's feet shimmered and faded as he and his party walked across the water along the safe route Avanthar's arts had secured for them. The strange little creatures living in that water did not trouble the delvers, preferring to wander about in the dark pond in pursuit of their prosaic goals of food, avoidance of danger, and procreation.
Once on the other side, Avanthar and his followers were again able to follow the mine-car track that continued into a tunnel beyond the chamber. That tunnel did not continue much further, nor did it contain any hazards for the explorers, until the very end. For the tracks stopped abruptly at the edge of a gaping, square-shaped hole about twenty feet on a side.
