The Abestat Military Base-Registration Office

After a person would wander through the main gates up towards the administration office that followed it. There was a dorin guard standing next to the door, and he looked at the people wanting to join the Abestat military diligently. "Good day!" he barked, his stature not changing a bit as he looked towards the new people that had business in the military base. "Registration is that way!" he continued, and then watched as they moved through the hard oak doors infront of them.

As they would enter, there was a desk with an older looking woman standing there sorting papers. She looked up to the person who came in as the bell at the top of the door rang. "Welcome!" she said, smiling, and then looked towards them. "I am Recruitment officer, Sargeant Reville...I take it you are looking to join the fine Abestatian Army?" she asked, hoping that the answer would be yes. If it was no, then she would take a different route than recruitment even though that was what she was good at considering she was the person in charge of the recruitment office...

OOC: I tried joining the military already, but never received orders or training. So I have decided to join again. If there is a problem with this, tell me and I will change my post.

IC: Vincent walked in to the Registration Office. He was a strange half elf, dressed in a black cloak and peasants cloths. His one good eye seamed to search the area as if looking for an attack. On his shoulder perched a raven, its red eyes doing the same thing as its master. Both seamed weary and a little tired.

Continuing his stride until he reached the registration officer Vincent answered Sargent Reville. “ Yes, I am here to join the Abestatian Army.” With that Vincent went quiet and waited for a reply.

Sargeant Reville listened as Vincent asked about joining the Abestatian Army. Smiling, he quickly reached inside the desk, and pulled out a paper. He handed it over to Vincent along with a bottle of ink, and a quill. "Here, fill these out lad," he said. "We shall get ya goin and ready here soon enough!"

Vincent looked at the paper. It was very general but effective. So he began to fill it out:

Previous Combat Training: none, I wish I had some
Reasons for wanting to join the Abestatian Army: need money and something to do. Plus my raven needs something to eat that is better than seeds, like man flesh. - har, har.

Handing the paper back, Vincent waited to see if there was anything else he needed to do. As Vincent waited his Raven began to give the Recruitment officer the evil eye.

As the raven began to give the Sargeant the evil eye, the Sargeant began to read over the paper. He looked up to Vincent after reading it, and said, "Well, we are gonna start ye off at 250 crowns a month, to get ya goin. Lemme just go get the paperwork for ye to be getting off to going to the stockade, and getting yer uniform and such."

He quickly made his way to a back room, and then brought out a few more forms which he signed himself and such. Then he quickly took out a military ID tag, and made it nice and neat with Vincent's name written on it.

"Here ya are laddy," he said, handing Vincent the Military ID Card, along with some papers. "Go take these to that saurid down the hall in the Stockade, and he will get ya set up with some weaponry and a uniform..." The Sargeant then allowed Vincent to go to the stockade as he had directed him, and went on to whoever was next in line...

Joining the Army? Why not?

As he walked through the crowded streets of Abestat, Milo noticed a large military building, the registration office for the Abestat Army.

The pay was bound to be good, and his innate hobbit dexterity and "heatsight" would definitely prove useful to the military commanders, whoever they are. Also, he could use a touch of adventure in his life. Even though he was already a mature hobbit, in his heart he was still a kid. "You're just like yer uncle Helio. A looney, adventurous airhead.", his old Dad always said. Milo remembered the exciting tales his eccentric uncle Helio used to tell him. As a wee lad, Milo dreamed about one day going on a huge adventure and travelling throughout Alleria, just like uncle Helio. His family considered his uncle insane, as he was not attracted to the "true values" of life: a good pipe, a hearty meal, and a warm burrow. Determined to live out at least a part of his boyhood dream, Milo walked in.

Inside, he was greeted by a towering dorin guard. He walked into the recruitment office, and greeted the female officer sitting at a desk.

"Serale, Sargeant Reville. My name is Milo Chubb. And yes, I am indeed here to join the Abestatian Army. I hope you need some capable scouts.", Milo said, and prepared himself for the pile of paperwork he'll probably have to fill out.

The female officer named Sargeant Reville looked down towards the hobbit. They definitely were in need of scouts, and it seemed that this hobbit wanted to be one. This is good, she thought to herself. Quickly she pulled out the necessary paperwork, and slid it over to the hobbit along with a pen that was already inked.

After Milo had filled out the form, Sargeant Reville took it, and began to fill out the necessary paperwork. She took out a card, wrote something out on it, and then handed it over to Milo. "That is your military ID," she said. "I am putting you in the Alpha Division. They are our scouters. You will now be called Private Milo." She then pointed down the hallway to the stockade. "Go down there, and give them these papers. They shall take care of getting you your uniforms and such..." she said...

Many good bases had a recruitment center on base as well as one off base. The one off base was to recruit raw civilians that knew nothing about the military and needed even the most basic concepts such as 'leave' and 'parade rest' explained to them, whereas this office functioned more as a re-enlistment center for base personnel to 're-up' their enlistments. Also, this was where officers needed to go to gain or resign commisions.

A good military often believed in the principle of forced redundancy, so that if an enemy knocked out one key office, the other would remain standing. And there was no more important or key an office to any military bureaucracy than this one: without new recruits, the most sophisticated army in the world would eventually cease to exist. Time and attrition would do their trick.
So this was one department that never worried about budget cuts or staff-reductions-in-force.

In fact, it was common knowledge on base that any enlisted soldier looking to buck for a promotion could put some time in here manning the office and get a Page 6 merit stamp added to their file.

The Registration Office was a new place for Kyli. She had never been in the one in Abestat, since she had been recruited for the military in Alleria Prime and then was stationed in Abestat. It had been quite some time since she had joined. It seemed like almost forever and remembering herself as the poor elf at the beginning seemed like reigns ago.

She had spent a small chunk of her life being enlisted (at least a small chunk from an elf's point of view), but had still managed to not be promoted once. Deep down, Kyli knew she had done a lot for the city, even if she was not recognized for it. Diana herself had said that her and her companions had saved Abestat. But nobody would ever know. Blecklefoot was no longer a threat to anyone. She had not seen him in at least a pattern. The only worries now seemed to be the invasions of the darker races. Kyli couldn't take much more of it, and was ready to move on to a less conflicted city. She had heard about Vers from a couple sailors at the tavern. They described its tropical climate as well as its training in druidism. At least she could say she got one thing out of the army.

So Kyli made her slow treck to the office, her luggage in tow along with the rest of the things she was issued upon joining. She could only hope that she would be allowed to buy her horse like they had told her she could when she joined. Kyli had grown rather fond of Pumpkin and they had been on many an adventure together. She was a good horse, and Kyli didn't think she could find one quite like her.

Kyli went up to the appropriate desk and asked, "Might this be the place where I can retire from the military?" Her countenance was a bit sad, but she was closing a chapter in her life and starting a brand new one. A new city and a new life.

Sargeant Reville looked up to see Kyli, and then quickly went on to answer her question. "Yes, this is the place where you can retire from the military if you so choose...Your Kyli right?" asked Sargeant Reville. "If you wish to retire from our military, then I will need to see your Military ID..." Her voice was calm, and sensative. The woman was definitely a desk type worker, for she was gentle in her ways.

"Are you truly sure that you want to?" she asked. As she did, the saurid from the Armory walked in, and looked up to see Kyli. It was Ssss'kon. Sargeant Reville turned over to see him, and said, "Hello Sargeant...might you have any advice for Kyli? She wants to retire from the army..." Ssss'kon looked towards the young woman. He had been a saurid of many battles, and finally came to work in the armory for his immense knowledge in the weaponry and armory that their army wields. "All I can sssssay," he said. "Issss good luck with whereever you are going..." Then Sargeant Reville looked back to Kyli, and awaited a response...

Sargent Reville continued to process the paperwork. "All right, according to our records you have served a standard two year basic enlistment. Because of the particular contract you signed when you joined, you are entitled to a retirement bonus of 1,000 crowns for Honorable Discharge."

She showed Kyli the contract. "The military life is not for everyone. Some grow and become corporals and sergeants, and some are content where they are. Still, this is an Honorable Discharge, and you will get your check and official discharge certificate at the Parade Grounds. The next ceremony is the day after tomorrow-- when they honor the newly promoted sergeants and applaud the incoming recruits-- and so there will be a special tribute to those getting Honorably Discharged as well."

Sergeant Reville went on to explain that to make the Abestat army life as attractive as possible, it was important to show new recruits that they had many options in life. One could stay and be promoted, or one could do an honorable tour of duty and be recognized as a proud veteran of service.

"After the ceremony, you Kyli will be one of those veterans, entitled to benefits at any Veteran's Center across Alleria. You will also need to take your discharge certificate to the base stables to arrange for title for Pumpkin, and to the base Quartermaster to return your room key and ID card and to the Payroll office to make sure your accounts are in order."

As Serdor walked into the recreuitment office he sighed, wondering if this would be the beginning or end of his military career. "Stop thinking like that!" he reprimanded himself. After all, the Abestat army was sure to need new recruits after the recent attacks. Nodding to himself he stepped forward to the woman at the desk. Shooting her a bright smile he said, "Serale, I am interested in joining your fine army." Standing at an easy stance he awaited her reply.

Kyli was relieved that Sergeant was as soft spoken and soothing as she was. She doubted she could have stood it if someone was yelling at her, telling her that she was a quitter and all that. She felt bad enough as it was, leaving all she had ever known behind. But she had done so before, and it had all turned out fine. I'm sure there's something else I can do. The military isn't everything, right. I need something else to do in my life.

With a determined nod, Kyli said, "I'm sure." Just then, a saurid walked in the door. The woman processing Kyli's paperwork asked him if he had any advice for the retiring Private. He simply wished her luck, though Kyli couldn't have been happier with his response. Somehow she had expected everyone to tell her not to leave, and though it was a little disappointing that nobody did, it made it a lot easier. Perhaps it was the Gods way of telling her that this wasn't the life for her.

As she was shown her contract, Kyli realized that she had never been informed of the two pattern agreement, but it didn't really matter because she had been around longer then that. She was very pleased that her discharge would be an honorable one, but was a little embarrassed that it would be done publicly in a ceremony. She would have preferred to quietly slip out, after all, what could they possibly say about her time there? But at least she would be honored as a veteran.

The woman informed Kyli of what she needed to do before being discharged, and she nodded in acknowledgement of it all. "Thank you," she said. "I will make sure I do all that." Then Kyli proceeded to exit the building.
