Military Base Stables

A place to keep the steeds of the soldiers, rather than to buy them, the stables of the military had been located in a rather out of the way location near the north-west city wall. It contained quite a large area of land that had been filled up with several different barns and stables to ensure that it could house all the horses of the soldiers of the military, plus that of guests to the base.

All the buildings had been made of wood, apart from one. A smallish looking stone hut served at the administration centre for all the various stabling buildings, and it's door had been propped wide open to invite soldiers in, to either deposit or collect their horse from the stables.

The interior of the building was very plain and simple. The only piece of furniture inside was a rather old, rickety looking wooden chair that had been placed against the left wall, for soldiers to sit and wait whilst their horse was being collected. Apart from that, a long wooden counter ran entirely along the back wall, with enough space for a person to stand behind it. A wooden door had been placed in the back wall, too, and since the building looked too small to have any other rooms within it, presumably it was a back door.

Behind the counter stood a slightly rotund looking human man, probably somewhere in his early thirties. Unlike a lot of other locations in the district, the stables were actually run by a civilian, and as such, the man was dressed in basic cotton breeches and a linen shirt, not a military uniform. His straw-coloured hair had been tied back neatly into a smart pony tail, and whenever anyone stepped into his office, he always gave them a friendly grin that made his dark green eyes sparkle in the slightly gloomy light of the small building.

"Serale, serale to you! Are you here to pick up or deposit?"

Timestamp: Hour 9 of Ioannes, Brightening 3 of the First Cycle, Summer of Era I.

Yarrow noted the plain interior thoughtfully, but it didn't prosses fully. It was a nice stable, so what if it was plain? Now her eyes drifted to behind the counter where someone would be working. She was taken a back for a moment at the human. It wasn't his looks, but what he was wearing. He was in a basic cotton breeches and a linen shirt. He had no military airs about him. He must be a civilian Yarrow thought to herself as she rained in Chestnut.

It took no imagination to think of why the beast was named what he was. He was all chestnut. His mane...his coloring...it was all a lovely chestnut coloring...thus his name, Chestnut.

"Serale, serale to you! Are you here to pick up or deposit?" the man asked. She flashed him a kind smile and patted her horse. Serale, sir. How goes things? I am dropping him off, sir. Yarrow told him, glancing at her beast fondly once more. He was really something.

The man smiled as she told him. He looked over the beast; it looked sturdy enough, and strong, too. "Dropping him off, hmm? A fine steed it is, if I may say so, miss." He paused, bending down out of sight for a moment behind the counter. When he came back up, he was holding a handful of papers.

"I'll just have to ask a question or two, if you wouldn't mind." He said, placing them on the counter and dipping a quill in an inkwell. "Let's see...I'm going to need your name and your rank. And it would help if you could give me an estimate as to how long you're going to be leaving him here, but I understand if you don't know that." He smiled at her and waited cheerfully for a response.

Yarrow smiled and nodded her head. He is a fine horse, thank you. Yarrow gave Chestnut another pat.

"I'll just have to ask a question or two, if you wouldn't mind. Let's see...I'm going to need your name and your rank. And it would help if you could give me an estimate as to how long you're going to be leaving him here, but I understand if you don't know that.

Oh! How rude of me. I am Yarrow Woodruff sir. Yarrow stuck her hand out for a shake. I am Staff Sergeant here in Abestat. I believe Chestnut will be here as long as I am here, but I am sorry to say I don't know how long that will be. She knew that she would try to come at least once every day though, just to check up on him. She didn't want him to forget who she was quickly.

He shook her hand as she extended, lightly but somewhat enthusiastically. For some reason, this man enjoyed his job quite a bit. "Good to meet you, Miss Woodruff." Thinking it over a moment, he scrawled a few things down quickly on one of the papers. "Thank you much, Sargeant Woodruff. I think you're horse will enjoy his stay here just fine." He paused to put the papers back underneath the counter. "If that's all then, I'll just take your horse over there." He smiled warmly again.

Thank you sir...that is all. Uh... She paused for a moment and then nodded her head before continuing her thought. I know I will be back tomorrow. I am buying some lessons for my...I guess you could call him an orphan I watch out for. He loves horses. So I guess I will see you tomorrow? She waved her hand as a good day and slipt out of the stables.

Yarrow approached the stables at an early hour so as to get to where she wanted to before the day (and duties) began up again. The stables were just like she had left them.

Inside the stables, the man was still there. He was lightly dozing, and made that rather obvious with loud snores and some sleeptalking. As he heard the door open, his head snapped up to greet her as she entered. "Serale Miss Yarrow! My, but you are an early riser. Early bird gets the worm, and all that, eh?" He paused, taking a bite of a half-eaten apple sitting on the counter. "So you're back. What can I do you for today?" He tilted head. He couldn't remember exactly, something about...orphans...and horses....no, it slipped his mind.

Yarrow saw the man as soon as he approached. She laughed at his comments about being an early bird, but only nodded. She had been told that she was an "early bird" before. She was known to sleep through a basic earthquake, however (or close to an earthquake that is).

So you're back. What can I do you for today?" Well...I need Chestnut for today because I bought some lessons...or am going to be buying lessons...for an orphan that I am looking out for. So...I don't know if they will be needing a horse or not, but if they do...well I don't want to come rushing back here for him. I hope this is no trouble for you sir.

He laughed heartily, remembering that was just about exactly what she had told him the day before. If it wasn't for his short memory he wouldn't have asked at all. But of course he did have a short memory and so he did ask.

"Why yes, yes of course! I'm sure...ah, Chestnut? Yes, that's it. I'm sure Chestnut would be happy to go with you for today. And between you and me, I think that anything that they would lend out for lessons wouldn't be as fine of a specimen as Chestnut. Anyways." He disappeared into the stables for a moment and returned, pulling her horse right behind him. "And there he is. You'll be bringing 'im back, right, Miss Yarrow?"

Yarrow smiled and laughed along with the man. She felt that this was a man who was trust worthy. He seemed a nice fellow anyways. She watched him vanish for a moment and when he returned, Chestnut was with him. Her horse was just as she had left him, in fine shape and happy.

"And there he is. You'll be bringing 'im back, right, Miss Yarrow?" Thank you very much sir. I will be returning him. I'm sorry sir, but I don't think I got your name... She paused...patting her horse with a dreamy smile. She had never owned a horse before because her family had been "poor" and her father had been a sailor. He had known nothing about horses.

He tilted his head as she spoke. He hadn't really been asked his name before as no importance would regularily be placed on it by patrons of the stables. In fact he had thought about it so little, he had nearly forgot, and it took a short while before he could speak. "Well madam, my name is Patterson. Edward Patterson. And if you don't mind my saying as such you really seem to like that horse, there. S'too bad he'll have to spend so much time away from you while he's in here." He gave another one of his warm smiles, and gestured towards the horse. "Well I guess you'd better be taking him away, then."

Edward Patterson...she stored his name away into her memory. She hardly ever forgot a name, but sometimes her memory did slip up a bit.

"...And if you don't mind my saying as such you really seem to like that horse, there. S'too bad he'll have to spend so much time away from you while he's in here." I don't mind Edward. I love all my animals. I am an animal person you could say.I am just sorry I can't spend more time with them. At least he will have you. I am sure you like animals as well...why else would you be here? She gave him a smile and a parting wave and her and the horse left the military stables once more.
