Entertaining the Boss (Private, Invite Only)

Galdon and his passenger appeared in a shambles in the middle of a courtyard. The Crimson Keep was situated in the middle of the city, and surrounding the cordoned off area were representatives from each of the city’s defences. Commander Galron stood next to his aide, his armor polished to a sheen and armed with a longsword. His aide stood next to him in the dress uniform of the Legion, standing at parade rest. Tellon Ferron, the commander of the Crimson Lions, was standing off to the side, the red cape of the Lions fluttering in the breeze as he talked in low tones with a Lion Half-Elf wearing a field uniform with the stripes of a Sergeant displayed proudly. An Elf wearing the robes of a Sorceror watched curiously, saying nothing. And in the back, lounging in the shade of the compound wall, was Colin Duncan, Subchieftain of the Clan Fianna with two of his Warriors. They each wore their tartan colors proudly, the blue and silver kilts drifting in the breeze. They each carried heavy weapons, a war axe, a huge sword, and a great club. Their bucklers were emblazoned with the silver wolf, the totem of Clan Fianna.

“M’Lord,” said Galron with a low bow. “You have come to see our defences, I take it? I assure you, Archadoon is well defended. We have arranged a tour of our compounds, a review of our soldiers and a demonstration of our abilities. When you are ready…?”

Appearing beside Galdon, Keldon looked around. He had been telaported by mages before and this was no different. Although his stomic churned like the end of days he was in better condition then his men. Who took a little while to come to.

When Galron spoke Keldon nodded his head. "Yes Imperatis Galron I have, and I would be most welcomed. I will admit I did not expect this type of greeting." He said with a smirk, the red cape of the ministry of war blowing in the breeze like everyone's. "I am as ready now as I will ever be, so lead the way sir."

First, introductions were begun. Galron waved the respective commanders over and pointed them out. “Tellon Ferron, commander of the Crimson Lions and his Senior Drill Instructor, Drill Instructor Silverblade. They are the representatives of our local forces, the Crimson Lions. This is their compound here, the Crimson Keep. Those wild looking men there,” he added, pointing at the Barbarians, “are Colin Duncan and two of his men. Colin is the second-highest Chieftain of the Fiannas, a Clan of Barbarians with a compound several miles from the gates. And finally…” He pointed to the Elf in the robes. “Salvan Darkleaf, our Dean of Colleges. As you can see, we have several different units.”

Colin chimed in, “My people rarely come inside the city proper, preferring to stay in the wilderness. We are constantly patrolling the surrounding countryside, and our scouts are second to none. We are within five minutes’ ride of the city, and can bring almost a thousand Warriors quickly if need be. These Warriors are split between horse, foot, archers and scouts. We may not be as disciplined as your Imperial troops, but we can get the job done, and well.”

Ferron put in his report next. “The Lions are well trained, sir. We have approximately six different departments: Combat Arms, which includes Infantry, Cavalry, and Archers; Security, which is our Military Police; Intellegence, which includes our Spies, Scouts, and other agents; Town Guard, which is the city’s police force; Training, which includes our Drill Instructors; and Administration, which includes our Clerks, our Blacksmiths, our Quartermasters, and everyone else that makes a military run. All told, we have a little over one thousand men and women.”

Darkleaf was next. “The Colleges are well prepared. We have instructors in every discipline save the foul art of Necromancy. Our instructors are the best, our students the brightest, and if need be, we can deploy throughout the city or surrounding area quickly. The number of students varies depending on the enrollments, but the Instructors are numbered in about seventy five.”

With a nod, Galron gestured for the Ministor to precede him. “Shall we begin the tour, m’lord?”

Keldon nodded his head making several notes from the numbers. "Interesting so a local tribe works with the local militia to ensure the laws are enforced? Very nicely organized, and do not concern yourself with discipline Colin, that is something that can be taught to troops if there willing. Should a war arise discipline will be needed on top of skill and resourcefulness." he said nodding his head slowly looking to the commander of the Lions. "Tell me Commander Ferron, how close does the local military and guard work with the imperial forces? From the impression I get at this meeting you all seem to be on the same page?" he asked looking to the three commanders.

Keldon motioned for them to continue the tour while they spoke.

Colin glared. It was as simple as that. He crossed heavy arms across his barrel chest and glared down a curved nose at Keldon. His accent got thicker as his anger became evident. “Aye, an’ sure an’ it is, too. Discilpline has a place, aye, but sure ‘tis no place to take in a freeman’s heart. Ye be thinkin’ we’re no the less Warriors fer goin’ into battle with a song on our lips an’ a gleam in our eye? Ye’ll be forcin’ yer discipline on me an’ mine? What’s th’ wrong with our fightin’ style, laddie?” The powerful Warrior made no move to pull a weapon. Despite his anger at the pompous fool for thinking him an inferior fighter, the Barbarian was quite shrewd, and knew that challenging the crazy coot was a one way ticket to war with the Empire.

Even so, Sergeant Longblade stepped forward, placing himself between the thickly muscled Warrior and the government official and his guard. “I believe you just insulted his pride,” the Half Elf said in calming tones. “The Fiannas are quite proud of their battle prowess, and have many victories and very few losses under their belts. In exchange for an old compound outside the city, they supply many troops to our city, and we are quite lucky to have them. I suggest we calm ourselves and carry on. We’re here for our defences, not to start a free for all in the streets!”

There was a ripple of agreement before the group carried on their business. Ferron took up the conversation. “We do regular training excersizes together. Right this moment, we have a mock combat with the Fiannas against the Lions and the Northern Cross in a field outside the city. It is a several day campaign, designed to give our soldiers experience working together. It’s in its first day, so we’ve plenty of time to see it. I assure you, sir, that if need be, the Imperial forces, the Lions, the Colleges and the Fiannas are well trained and equipped for anything that comes our way.” He pointed to a doorway, leading deeper into the bowels of the Crimson Keep. “Shall we begin our tour, sir?”

Keldon made a mental note about the words spoken to the barbarian force, they maybe effective however normal civil terms maynot be understood in the way they were ment. Nodding his head to the man he applogised. Turning Ferron he made several notes and smiled. It would be interesting to see s mock battle taking place, although he pondered the expense for such a thing regardless he was assured by the commander that the forces here were capable. Although the idea to merge them all into a single unit save for the barbarians was starting to look more plausible.

Moving in the direction that he was pointed towards he started to speak asking another question. "Which reminds me Commander, does the city have any farmland or way to become self sufficient if besieged? If the city is to be cut off how long do you expect it would be able to last during an all out siege before food supplies and the like would run out? As that was a primary decision of mine to retreat from the Citadel in Paxia during the orcish siege last era. We could just not sustain ourselves any longer." he finished moving in the direction the commanders were leading him. His guards not far behind.
