Alia, The Town Doctor (Ardyne, Elma, Suvia)
OoC...You three are pretty much in the same spot of Healing so I am going to teach you all right here.
IC...
Alia went to each girl and told them to meet her in the back of the tent were she slept. This, she hoped would work out for the better. Once all three girls had made there way she began.
"You have all come to me to learn healing, and I have agreed to teach you all for free. I want to take this time to teach you all at the same time. This way not only will you be learning but you may help one another improve on each others skill by helping when they are not preforming something in the correct way. I don't want you to take this in any way wrong on your part. I just feel that this way is for the best. Now Suvia here is one step behind and knows not the four basics. Would one of you so kindly show me what you have learned by telling her what they are and showing her how to perform the first one. Do not be afraid of one another, you are all going to do fine and I am one of the best. Now please...begin"
Alia took a step back to see how the thread would interact with each other and who would take the stand to help out Suvia. This was going to very interesting indeed.

Seeing that no one else wanted to begin, Elmaryia decided to go first. Ever the observer the young woman learned from watching others. Once the greetings between the three woman were exchanged, Elma decided to tell them what she had learned.
" Well I have learned from Alia how to make a person breath again. The first step you must do is observe the person, if they are blue in the face mouth to mouth is needed. In order to do this you must tilt the person's head back and then pinch their noise and blow air from your mouth into theirs. I also learned about the four important steps in aiding the wounded they are, Restore Breathing, Stop bleeding, Protect/treat the wound and Treat for shock."
With a smile at the two other woman she waited to see what they had learned.

Suvia peered at the turquoise irises of the tall human woman as she explained, both confidently and articulately, the first step in aiding the wounded. To conclude, she quickly listed the three remaining steps that outlined the skill;
“…Stop bleeding, Protect/treat the wound and Treat for shock.”
Listening to her, Suvia was not exactly sure how to receive the human woman, as that she seemed completely different from all of the other human women she had ever encountered in her small fishing community. To Suvia, there was something about her that seemed guarded. But why not? The city they were in had seen such a large level of distruction, it was no surprise to Suvia would get this feeling from anyone. Everyone in Archadoon at that point had something either on them or in them, weighing them down.
Paying this sobering thought no mind, she herself gave a gingerly grin after the human Elmaryia had smiled. It helped to put Suvia at ease. “Alia speaks the truth in my lack of knowledge of treating the wounded. The very most I have done thus far was in the last half candlemark where I merely handed Alia the items she requested and helped a boy I was tending drink whole a water skin. I must thank you though Ms. Elmaryia for this overview of Restore Breathing. Before this I had no previous knowledge.”
Feeling a bit sheepish about her initial ignorance, she hoped that her new peers would not look too far down upon her; she wished to make no enemies.

Ardyne smiled and nodded as she listened to the two speak of their newfound knowledge. She had just recently watched how Alia had instructed some of her nurses to sterilize the instruments they used and treat the deep gash in the hand of a child named Sue. "Cleanliness is also key when tending to the injured and sick. All the instruments should be sterilized either with an antibacterial solution or even with a flame. Ensuring that our hands and instruments are clean as well as cleaning the wound thoroughly will help prevent infection in the future. I also noticed that using fire on a metal surface used in a procedure, such as a scalpel or needle can also help cauterize a wound while treating it so that there is less bleeding."
Now that they had each shared a bit of their knowledge, Ardyne smiled at Elmayria and Suvia and then looked back at Alia.

"Great." Ali said after hearing what each person had to say. "The next thing is how to stop bleeding. But first I will explain how to restore ones breathing once more before moving on. First you must check for a pulse by placing two fingers on a pulse point, be sure not to use your thumb, and verify the pulse. The recommended places to check are the wrist, side of neck, or by placing an ear over the heart itself. If there is no pulse then mouth to mouth is needed get the person breathing once more and their heart beating. To do this you Turn patients head to one side, remove any debris in the mouth or throat with a finger sweep. Lay patient on his back placing an object under his shoulders to cause the head to tilt back. If not possible, tilt the head back by hand until head is in a chin-up position. Deep breath, place mouth over patients mouth or nose (w and form a seal. For a small child size person, form seal over mouth and nose. Pinch the nose or cover the mouth. Focus eyes on patients chest and blow watching the chest rise slightly. Blow at a rate of 12 to 20 per minute listening between each blow to the air to come back out of the lungs or if breathing resumes normally. Keep a steady pace but no exact timing is needed. If chest doesn’t rise, check for debris in the throat, tilt head more, check your seal on patient’s mouth, or give several blows on the back to try dislodging a blockage. Ok you got that?" Alia looked from girl to girl waiting to see if any questions needed to be answered. If not she moved on.
"To stop bleeding you will use a method called pressure dressing. You will look for entrance or exit wounds. The cut away clothing or remove armor over wound, don’t touch or try to clean wound. Apply pad over wound and secure it in place with bandages tightly. If this does not stop the bleeding, elevate wound but be sure not to elevate it is it is a fracture, or place hand on pad for five to ten minutes. If pressure dressing does not work then you will need to use pressure or grasp. To do this put pressure with two fingers, not the thumb, or grasp one of the eleven pressure points nearest the wound and between the wound and main part of the body. The eleven pressure points are: lower jawbone just below last back tooth, temple, side of neck, top of collar bone, inner side of bicep, just below inner side of elbow, wrist, front of pelvis, top of quadriceps, back of knee, ankle. Are there any questions?" Alia paused yet again to answer any question that may have been asked.
"Suvia show me how you would pinch the nose of someone who needs mouth to mouth. If you please Elma lay on your back. Then Elma show me how you would check for ones pulse, you can show me using Ardyne. Finally Ardyne once Elma is finished show me where the eleven pressure points are, and you can some me using Suvia please."

After having watched the other two perform their procedures, Ardyne stood and moved over to Suvia. She gently guided her to stand between the 3 women and more directly in front of their instructor. Ardyne's hand raised slowly and moved carefully towards the pressure points that were described before as she spoke. "The eleven pressure points are the lower jawbone just below last back tooth." She pressed a finger against the first pressure point, not hard enough to harm Suvia, but accurately show where it was. She could feel the vein throbbing beneath her finger before she moved her finger to the side of Suvia's head above and forward from her ear."The temple." She moved to the other side of Suvia and cradled the young woman's neck in her palm, her thumb resting on her spine and two delicate fingers that searched and finally settled on the artery. "The side of neck." Using the same hand, she moved her palm over Suvia's shoulder, her fingertips following the collarbone to to next pressure point. "The top of collar bone." She took Suvia's wrist and lifter her arm to the side, she gently, but firmly grasped her bicep searching with her fingertips for the pressure point finding the throbbing area in the soft flesh of the inner arm. "The inner side of the bicep." Her hand moved down the arm, and her fingertips rested below the inside of the elbow. "Just below the inner side of the elbow." Ardyne then turned the young woman's hand so that her palm would face upward, resting her fingers against the pressure point there. "The wrist." Ardyne ignored how awkward this was becoming as she continued finding the pressure points and located the one towards the front of Suvia's hip. "The front of the pelvis." She moved her hand down to where Suvia's leg met her torso, pressing firmly along the top of the muscles so as only to have to do this once without it becoming uncomfortable for them both. Upon finding the pressure point, she stated, "The top of the quadriceps." She gently pulled Suvia so that she would face the side and Elmayria and Alia could see better. She bent her knees and pressed two fingers at the back of Suvia's knee. "The back of knee." And finally Ardyne leaned forward, grasping Suvia's ankle with her finger and thumb just below and behind the protruding bones. "Finally, the ankle."
Standing once more as Suvia turned back to the group, Ardyne took a place next to Alia and smiled at the women, waiting to see what their instructor would assign next.

Watching Elma recline back onto the dusty floor, Suvia took the few gingerly steps over to the woman and knelt down.
“Alright, I’m going to demonstrate now—I’ll just go through the motions, if that’s okay…Miss Elma and I aren’t quite that familiar.” She said with a sheepish smile.
Taking care to tilt her patient’s head back, Suvia began to speak aloud.
“With the head in a chin up position, you would pinch shut the nostrils of the patient with the thumb and index finger to prevent air from escaping.” Without actually pinching shut the woman’s nose, Suvia placed her fingers over her nostrils to simulate the fashion in which the procedure should be done.
“Taking a deep breath,” Suvia continued, “place your mouth over the patient’s forming an airtight seal blowing at a rate of twelve to twenty breaths per minute. Take care to watch the patient’s chest to make sure it is rising. If the chest doesn’t rise, you must check your application of the treatment by tilting the head more and checking your seal on the patient’s mouth. If this is not the problem, then the throat must be checked for obstructions. If a blockage is detected, then dislodgment of the obstruction may be acheived by giving several blows on the back.”
While Suvia was speaking, she gestured all around Elma’s body to make a point of what she was saying. After completeing her task and receiving an approving nod from Alia, Suvia stood and helped her volunteer patient off of the floor.

Upon hearing Suvia's words Elmaryia was quite pleased that she would not be putting her mouth on her own. After all never had Elmaryia been kissed before and she did not want Suvia to be her first.
Laying down Elmaryia let Suvia demonstrate the matter of mouth to mouth on her. The lessons were quite interesting, and Elmaryia knew that in the future they would be very useful. Once Suvia was done with her demonstration, Elmaryia proceeded to demonstrate how to check for a pulse.
" Well as you said earlier, to check for a pulse you use a finger to the wrist." Taking Ardyne's wrist she demonstrated the lesson by taking her finger and placing it against her wrist. Feeling the pulse Elmaryia smiled. " Another spot that you can check for a pulse is the neck." Using the same finger Elma gently placed it against the right side of Ardyne's neck. " You can also put your head to her chest and listen for a heart beat."

“Very good,” said Ali, nodding as she watched her students’ demonstrations. “You know how to put pressure on wounds and how to breathe life back into someone. One of the most fearsome enemies of the healer is shock. When someone suffers a grievous wound, such as a soldier being stabbed with a sword, a farmer losing an arm in an accident, or any other injury where the victim loses a lot of blood over time, he or she is in danger of falling into shock. A major injury that does severe damage to the body all in one go, like being burned severely, will put the victim into shock immediately.”
Ali had Suvia stand and lie on the ground in front of her, kneeling next to her. “The way to treat shock is to first determine the victim has shock. Shake the victim’s shoulder gently, speaking to her to get her attention. If she is alert, awake, and speaking coherently, she is not in shock, though she may fall into shock later if she is bleeding severely enough. Signs of shock could be that she is silent and staring into space, cold and clammy skin, pale skin, or one pupil of the eyes larger than the other. If unconscious, still check the skin and pupils.”
The healer took a blanket from where it lay in a cupboard and started to fold it. “The way to treat shock is that you elevate the feet, sending blood back into the upper body,” she said, tucking the rolled-up blanket under Suvia’s feet. “A second blanket is used to cover the victim to keep her warm,” she added, sliding a second blanket over the girl she was demonstrating on. “Always do this, even if it’s hot and muggy. You can use water to keep the face damp, but never let the victim drink. OK, are you girls ready to try?” she asked, pointing to the cupboard stuffed with blankets.

Suvia climbed to her feet after she was demonstrated on. Walking to the cupboard, she retrieved the several blankets there and set them down, taking two for herself. Suvia looked to Elma and asked if she could practice with her. With Elma's agreement, Suvia would have lie upon the floor, and ask 'if she was alright', giving her a gentle shake. Assuming for the purpose of the exercise that she was not, Suvia would check Elma's skin for clamminess, distant stares, out of sync pupils or prolonged silence, then proceed to take one of the blankets she had (making sure it was folded) and prop it under her feet to elevate the legs for blood flow back to the upper portion of the body. Suvia would figure this action would keep more blood around the heart so that the muscle would not have to work as hard with less blood. Suvia would then take the second blanket and cover Elma up. Suvia would then figure that this action would help the victim maintain body heat, seeing as that blood circulation helped regulate the body's internal temperature.

Ardyne smiled and nodded at Suvia in thanks of getting the blankets they would need. "Thanks!" she said as she took 2 blankets for herself. Ardyne figured since Elma was already on the floor being demonstrated on, she would ask to use her again, if Elma allowed it, Ardyne would remove Suvia's blankets and follow the same procedure: asking 'if she was alright', giving her a gentle shake, checking Elma's skin for clamminess, distant stares, out of sync pupils or prolonged silence, then proceed to take one of the blankets she had (making sure it was folded) and prop it under her feet to elevate the legs for blood flow back to the upper portion of the body, then taking the second blanket and cover her up. It seemed quite simple to assist someone in shock.

It seemed as though for the moment the two other woman would demonstrate their newly learned skills on Elmaryia. Laying down on the ground she let Suvai practice on her. While she did so Elmaryia payed attention to what the young woman was doing. For the moment being content in the role of guinie pig El let Ardyne practice on her as well. Once she was done she would ask for Suvai to lay down and practive what she had learned.
After the young woman was layind down, El would check the girls responsivness. Gently Elma placed her hands on Suvai's shoulders and gently shook her. This was proceeded by Elmaryia checking her skin for clamyness then she folded up the blanket and placed it under the girls legs to elivate them. After this was done she placed the blanket over the girl.
" What if their is no blankets near by can one use their own body heat to assist the person in shock?," El asked their instructor.

“Very well done,” the instructor said, watching as her students completed their practice with shock. “A blanket is just an example of what to use. A cloak, a jacket, even piled dirt and leaves will get the same effect. Never put your own body next to someone in shock, unless it’s very cold weather. The key is to cover the victim, not get them warm. In fact, if it’s warm outside, your body heat could do even more damage to the victim. Make sure you keep the victim awake, and don’t let him or her fall asleep or go unconscious. If you do, they will never wake up again.” The blankets were scooped up and put away quickly and neatly before the next course was started.
“Broken bones are never easy things to handle,” said Alia cheerfully, looking at each of her students carefully. “There are four kinds of broken bones. They are known as oblique, comminuted, spiral and compound. An oblique fracture is a fracture that goes at an angle to the axis of the bone, a comminuted fracture is a fracture of many relatively small fragments from the break, the spiral is a fracture that runs around the axis of the bone like the threads of a screw, and a compound fracture is a fracture which breaks the skin. Each is handled differently, even if some of the techniques are similar. Does anyone here know the symptoms of a broken bone compared to a sprain? Both have pain, swelling and tenderness, but what’s the difference?”

Suvia watched Alia carefully as she considered the question. Suvia had never known the pain of a broken bone, or knew of anyone who endured it. Swelling and tenderness seemed reasonable, but what else?
"Alia, what about bruising?" The mermaid answered without having much of an idea; bruising didn't seem like an unrealistic symptom to her. She glanced about the others, maybe they knew. Either way, all of them would have a better understanding by time the lesson was over.

"It would seem reasonable to hear a cracking or snapping sound when a bone breaks. If it comes through the skin, the break would be obvious also." Ardyne said as she nodded to Suvia's comment. She waited for Alia to explain further.
