Schola Days, Schola Days... (Open. Mod please?)

Time Stamp: Hour 6 of Brightening 11, of the second cycle of Cryxatum
Summer of Era II of the Celestial Madate, Era IX Post Fractum in the Age of the Darkening, the Mageocracy of Julos the Mad
Paradigm:Schism in the Church of the Faith!

OOC: Alrighty, first try at a real thread

Some things you could change. Your appearance, your lifestyle, your irritating siblings, your screeching parents, your home. School, sadly, didn't seem like something that Xine could change. He had made the agreement with his parents that if he moved out, he'd still attend schola. Xine could see their point of view; he was as dumb as a rock. His only real skill involved provoking people, and you couldn't make much money with that.

So, like so many days before, the youth trudged up the beaten dirt path, through the large leafy maple trees, towards his prision and place of learning, the Schola house. It wasn't a very big place, there weren't that many people living on this tiny little island, and a lot of the tiny population was visiting sorcerers. Still, where there was people, there was children, and they had to be taught something or else the parents would get all ansty. And lord knows they had enough to be antsy about...

Making his way in the direction of school, he could tell it was going to be another dull brightening indeed. For where he usually caught up with parts of his class, who were all heading towards school as well, this particular day, he didn't meet anyone until the last turn left in the direction of school. He could see another lad about his age walking towards school as well, he didn't know the guy by name, but he had seen him a couple of times in school. This wasn't really the largest school in the neighbourhood, even if the was the only one on this side of the island. From what Xine could tell, the guy had been in some schools brawls and was even expelled for a couple of brightenings last semester. He had rough, uncombed brown hair, green eyes and was rather tall and muscular. He signalled towards Xine to make him wait for a moment so he could catch up.

"Serale there! You're Xine right? I'm Brian. I saw you at school sometimes, you don't look like a schola kind of type to me. I don't really like school as well, half of the time I don't even go there. Great thing is, my parents paid for it, but they don't even care! Instead there is this great place, a lake not far from school, you can swim there and it isn't too deep. On a wonderful brightening as today, who's going to go sit inside a school building all the day? You want to come to the lake? I'm telling you, it's great, you won't regret it!" the guy came out of nowhere with this offer, but it was something to think about a bit more. He was right, the suns were shining brightly and it was an awesome weather to take a swim and what was Xine really aiming at with his schola? He only went because he had promised his parents to keep going to school when he moved on his own. But his parents weren't here...

Xine glanced curiously at the boy. He looked him up and down, sizing the man up instictively. Finally, recognition clicked in, and the youth took a more relaxed stance to this more aggressive boy. He arched an eyebrow as Brian made his proposial. He had to admit, Brian's suggestion was very tempting. It was boring as hell in schola, and now that he was out of his parent's stranglehold grip, shouldn't he enjoy it? Exersize his new freedom with a dip in the cool ocean? With the suns blazing overhead, Xine could certainly use it.

'Waaaaiiit... Why is Brian offering this to me of all people?' Pondered Xine suspiciously. 'This sounds a lot like a setup for a prank. Oh yeah, Jacob fell for this one before when 'lex took his cloths while he was swimming. He had to walk back home naked! Well, I'm not falling for this one. Having 16 brothers and sisters looking to screw you for a good laugh doesn't make you a fool, no-sir-ree!'

"Ehh, thanks for the offer Brian, but I think I'll pass. There's this really cute elf in the front row, and I'm trying to snag a date for after school." Said Xine with his patented, innocent 'I-didn't-do-it' look on his face.

Brian reacted with a sort of a shock on his face, as if he didn't believe that someone wouldn't enjoy a nice swim at the local lake. "Whatever you say.. I'm off... " he said with a wave as he headed off the path towards school and started to sprint in the direction of this lake he mentioned before probably. Xine closed in on school, his private little prison, and he was greeted at the school gates of the by one of the older teachers who was waiting there, counting the heads, not playing an all too close attention to exactly who it was, but more watching how many entered.

"Welcome to another brightening of enlightening the mind!" he called out towards Xine, who was walking there pretty lonesome, either everyone was already inside, or a lot of children decided to not go this particular brightening. It would soon become clear that they were already inside as he entered one out of the two classrooms, the one in which his class was assembled. Some of them greeted Xine as he entered the classroom and sat down at his place. Moments later the same teacher that had greeted everyone outside entered the class and cleared his throat.

"Serale everyone! Everyone get their books ready and work on those math sums we worked on yesterday, I'm sure none of you actually looked at it last night so I give you the chance to finish it up now in the next candlemark after which we'll work them out together..." he said as everyone grabbed their books and got to work. "Pssst.. Hey! Hey Xine, where were you last night at the party Clark gave?" a somewhat familiar voice whispered in Xine's direction. It was one of his classmates, Irchul, a human of sixteen years old, blond hair, blue eyes, the usual. Someone he only knew from school and not in a personal way, however, in-school everyone talked to each other about the nightlife.

"Uh huh, whatever." Sighed Xine as he trugged his way up the path towards school. Wanting to get the experience over with, the youth walked into the classroom and slumped into his seat. This was probably going to be a boring day amonst many.
"Clarks party? Oh yeah! That was a pretty kickin' party. Say, did you get the name of the guy playing guitar? He was a friggin' master! " Xine whispered back to the other youth.

"Yeah, he was pretty decent I suppose, didn't catch his name though... I was dancing too much to even bother!" he added with a gentle smile on his face. "I'd best get to finishing that math, I didn't even do anything last night..." he whispered as he faced his papers and picked up his quill and started writing and thinking, more thinking then writing though it seemed. Perhaps it would be a wise thing to start working on the math as well for Xine, had he even started it last night? He'd have to check his papers in his bag. It seemed like he had at least done something.

It was a boring subject, but one that had to be passed nonetheless, fortunately for him it wasn't a lot of homework. It was quite a normal amount actually, for he had seen books of his older brothers with at least ten times the sums and even much more difficult ones! Still, time was running out, only three quarters of a candlemark left.

Geh, math. It was pretty boring, sure, but it was also pretty simple to do. He liked how there was an answer to every question, rather then constant interpretation and thinking about feelings and stuff with other subjects. Xine was pretty good at it, but he still probably wouldn't complete everything by the time limit. Oh well, Xine figured he might as well start. The youth picked up his quill, and got to work.

1 + 19 + 24 = 44
4 + 12 + 37 = 53
3 * 4 = 12
4 * 5 = 20
9 * 8 = 72
14 - 6 + 7 = 15
4 * 2 + 8 = 16
6 * 3 * 3 + 4 = 58
19 - 4 - 7 = 8
57 - 29 + 27 - 14 = 41
13 * 7 + 15 +17 = 123
9 - 6 + 19 = 22
81 / 9 = 9
100/10 = ??
8 * 8 + 6 + 80 = ???
150 / 5 * 3 = ??

And then time ran out.

As the time had ended, and the teacher tapped on the school board, "Everyone, put down your quills, let's check the homework shall we? You there, Lloyd, what's the answer to three sums, and how did you get those answers?" he asked with a kind voice, even though his face seemed pretty stern. This was the toughest part of the homework, explaining what you had done and why, and then just hoping that you had done it right. "Euhm, well, the first sum I plainly added one plus nineteen, which makes it twenty, and then plus twenty-four, making it fourty-four. The second sum I added up four plus twelve, making it sixteen, then plus thirty-seven, making it fifty-three. And the third I took three, and then multiplied it with four, which basicly means three plus three plus three plus three, making it twelve..." this Lloyd answered with a pretty loud voice. He sounded pretty certain, then again, he got the first three sums, those were a piece of cake. "Very well done Lloyd, that's correct. Now, for the next three, how about... Xine... why don't you do the next three?" the teacher asked, again with his gentle voice. Most likely his voice would stay like that until a mistake was made.

Yeah, he figured Lloyd would get the easy ones. The way this day was going, it figured that he'd be called up to answer some of these boring questions. Xine rolled his eyes like a fish, sighed, and rose to his feet, paper in hand.
"Alrighty. Ummm... Fourth question, is easily 20 with 4 groups of 5. Fifth is again, just basic muliplication, the answer being 72. For the sixth question you add 14 and 7 first, then subtract the 4 for 15. Yup, that's about it."

The teacher listened carefully to the way in which Xine explained his answers, and perhaps more importantly the way he had gotten the answers. "Yes, and by substracting the four, you mean the six I suppose, or else you wouldn't get the correct answer which you stated, fifteen. But the rest sounds alright, I don't expect anything less from you on these simple sums..." the teacher answered with his common, stern voice. It seemed that with the adrenaline rushing through Xine as he had to explain to the teacher and the whole class what his answers were, he had made a mistake in what he had substracted, fortunately the answer had still been correct thus making it obvious that he misspoke and didn't misunderstood the sum. The class continued and other pupils were asked for the answers, until the last two questions. It was Gerald's turn, a not all too bright kid who had already done this class before and thus was older then the rest of the children. "Euhm, I don't know sir, those last two sums were so hard, I just couldn't answer them!" he apologized with some remorse in his voice. "Well, does anyone else know the answers to the last two questions? Surely one of you must have finished everything that you had to do for today?" the teacher asked, as the class went silent. Would there be anyone who had finished it, or dared to answer those difficult last ones, perhaps even without having done them already?
