Engineering Arrogance

So I was on the train wednesday with one of my bestfriends. We were heading back from university and here was an excerpt of our conversation:

HER: Oh, and by the way, you know Baird right? Kate is dating him now.

ME: What? Really? I can't believe that...I just can't see those two together.

HER: I probably shouldn't have told you that, you probably don't like Baird.

ME: No I don't, mainly because he cheats on every girl he's ever been with and he's just a jackass in general.

HER: Hahaha, then I guess I shouldn't tell you that he started dating Kate while he was still with his old girlfriend.

ME: Yah, see, that's exactly why I don't like him. I'm not surprised at all...that's exactly what he's going to do to Kate too, and then I'll like him even less.

HER: Yah, he probably will but whatever.

ME: (Here I'm a bit surprised that she doesn't care that one of our bestfriends who never dates is going to get f'ed over and hurt) But yah...wow I just can't believe it...Kate and Baird. I would've never saw THAT one coming. I just can't imagine them together, they're so different.

HER: Actually, I could see it coming ever since she found out he was going into engineering at UofA just like Kate.

ME: What, really? Kate went into engineering? I thought she was doing business, that's what she told me several times. I just can't believe her and Baird are together (this has less to do with their personality clashes than another thing).

HER: No, you know what your real problem is, it's this. Kate went into engineering, Jackie went into engineering, I went into engineering, David did science, and Xander went into business. And you? You did English. And you're just mad because we're all smarter than you.

ME: (Seriously restraining myself from flipping right the holy f'ing jesus out) What? I chose not to go into those. Why would I do engineering when I want to be a lawyer?

HER: Well yah, I guess you would make a good lawyer. You argue a lot and you're usually right.

Okay, so basically from there I kept things civil despite wanting to tear her head off and feed her body to rabbies infested dogs.

I seriously couldn't believe that she said that to me. I mean, from David, I wouldn't have been surprised. I'd have even suspected it. But not from her, despite the fact that she's quite often a big biotch. That makes me think though, if she thinks that what do the rest of them think?

To put it into perspective they all get (I should say got, I don't know their uni marks only their high school marks) mid to high 90's in pretty much all of their classes generally. I don't, I get 80's. But to be fair, I go to half of my classes maybe and I don't do any homework ever.

I felt like retorting, "Really? Didn't you get 82% on your social diploma after never missing a class and studying your ass off alll semester to get that mark? Didn't you kill yourself for that mark? And wait, didn't I miss 50% of the classes, do none of my homework, never open a single book and get 93% on that same diploma?"

Or how about you apply that same logic to all of my classes. I went to half of physics AP, chem AP, english, math, etc. and still manage to have comparable knowledge on the subject. I wanted to say, "Imagine if I actually applied myself just once. Imagine the *expletive deleted* idiots you would all look in comparison to me then."

And seriously, can they not see the logic in doing something like English when I want to be a lawyer? Why in God's name would I do a science/engineering program? And she's also very well aware that I had originally been accepted to business but had switched to english before the year started because I never wanted to do business in the first place.

But then...can I really blame her for her arrogance when engineering students are constantly told that they're the smartest and they're the best? Even in high school I remember our physics and chemistry teacher going, "You are all the smartest people in this school by far, probably even the province. You're among the brightest in the nation, and even the world. Engineers are the best people in society, the smartest. When you go to university you'll be with the smart people, all the other people, especially non-business and science students are dumb."

Umm...yah...okay...good for you yah smarty pants engineers...you can MEMORIZE crap. Oooh, you must be just brilliant. Too bad you don't do any real thinking and development of your own ideas. Too bad you barely ever have original thoughts. Too bad you just copy genius' work and pass off their brilliance as your own.

I would like to give all those arrogant and egotistical engineers out there a big 'SIXTH LETTER OF THE ALPHABET' YOU.

    That ability isn't at question.

What rubs me the wrong way is the almost blanket arrogance shown by engineers (and their belief that it's fine to behave in such a fashion) because of the fact that they understand science.

Intelligence doesn't give anybody the right to be a prat.
