This Saturday, I was celebrating my girlfriend's thirtieth birthday with friends and family at her home in South Boston, when at about 3 am, we smelled smoke. She bolted out to her balcony, and saw the adjoining building next to hers entirely ablaze with a woman on the ground screaming for her children. My girlfriend, Kelly, then cried out, "If you can hear me, reach out and give me your hands!", beckoning for anyone inside to reach out the window so that she could reach them. There was no response, but within moments, the fire began to unleash molten flaming tar onto her house. As we climbed down the three flights of stairs, firefighters burst into the main floor with hatchets in hand and began waking up tenants at lower floors. For the next four hours, we witnessed in horror and shock the scene that unfolded. The house that had been caught on fire was gutted completely, and two children -- ages 14 and 3 -- had died. Had it not been for a modern firewall built into Kelly's house, the flames could have consumed her and wiped us all out. The police declared the incident, given how quickly the flames traveled, a likely arson, and the neighborhood a crime scene.

We only just got some sleep last night after having been awake for nearly 48 hours. Today, I have been helping Kelly deal with insurance companies, reach out to friends and family, and find support. Police allowed us onto the premises of her home where there was smoke damage, and the trapsing of firefighters -- all of whom did an amazing job putting out that fire in twenty minutes -- through her home, but most of her possessions were safe and secure.

Our prayers go out to the family of this horrible, terrible crime and horrific tragedy. I know that police are working feverishly, and already have people in custody. I will keep all of you posted as we deal with this tragic event.

Latest updates: apparently, DSS had taken away the kids who were living there illegally due to parental neglect and abuse.

Grand Jury has now been convened to issue indictments against the woman suspected of having tossed the molotov cocktail that killed the two girls, who were only identifiable by their dental records. Such a horrible tragedy:
