The mines of Demios are south of the town proper and the Weaver's Woods. The mines are a major source of income for the island because of the gemstones and metals that are produced there and shipped off to the mainland.
The mines' main metal products include lead, copper, iron, and tin. Gold is once said to have been found in the mines in small amounts, but none has been uncovered so far. More gemstones are found than metals; these include sapphires and rubies.
To reach the mines, a single and very long path curls through the Weaver's Woods and up the mountainside. The open-air path turns into a cave tunnel eventually, leading to the mines after nearly a candlemark of walking uphill. Because most of the path is exposed to Demios' unpredictable weather, it is often subject to slippery mud, rock slides, strong winds, and heavy snows. It is a dangerous journey, so not many travel to or from the mines for kicks.
Most of the 900 or so dwarfs that live in Demios work in the mines. They toil there night and day, resting only to sleep and eat hearty meals in the adjacent cabins in the mountains. The longhouse-style stone and wood cabins provide the workers with comfortable beds, long tables for eating and drinking, and shelter against the harsh weather of the high mountaintops.

Name: Rai'kra Jiea, Master Miner
Race and Gender: Dwarf male
Age: 352 (middle age adult)
Physical Description and Behavior: Rai'kra stands a bit over 4 feet tall and weighs roughly 300 pounds. His black hair is tied back in a large ponytail kept in place by an improvised hair-tie made of dried silk spiderwebs. He rarely leaves the caves of the mines, since he lives there in a room behind his office. He enjoys talking about his accomplishments and teaching people how to mine. He prefers to teach other dwarfs, but is not averse to teaching humans or other races. His only prejudice is against elves; he will always show distaste regardless of their age.
History: He rarely talks about his childhood, but he enjoys to brag about the fact (or belief) that his parents and grandparents were the best miners around, and his brother was the greatest blacksmith ever born.
