Joyau Takes a Walk Along the Beach (Saka)

2nd cycle of Melora, Winter

Joyau explored the city, finally finding the beach and ocean. She had never walked along a beach, so she took off her new shoes and decided to walk along the edge of the water. The sand felt funny, but nice. It wasn't so cold here as it was in Medonia. She took off her navy blue coat and laid it down on the sand. She had her meditation book with her so she sat down and read it for a while. Her meditation has been interrupted so many times during the winter what with war and everything she had experienced.

The Path of Three lay open on her lap as she stared out into the sea as she meditated on everything she had learned. It seemed a very long time since she had left her village home. First she had traveled to Aelyria Prime, then to Taralon, she had visited Medonia and learned the first combat, something she thought she would never do, but Zim Rage had given her a elvish longknive and after her experience in the Ratta Rebellion, she knew that some day she might have to use it. Even though she could never kill anyone or anything, she could at least use it well enough to not injure herself. She was now in Demios and she wondered where else her travels would take her.

The ocean waves were lapping against this peaceful shore, their song soothing the little sprite's soul. If anyone came by, they would see a pretty winged sprite, almost 3 feet tall, sitting there staring out at sea, her golden curls blowing around her heart shaped face. She wore one of her new gowns, the filmy yellow one which blew around her ankles. Until recently, she had never thought of herself as a girl or young woman. The only thing she ever thought about was her duty. She sighed and looked back upon the last year. She then cleared her mind, and tried to relax.

The sound was almost hypnotic, and Joyau had trouble keeping her eyes open. She stood and stretched and then walked toward the water. She walked in the shallow water, the wet sand squishing in her toes. She saw seashells half-buried in the sand and skipped along the shore stopping here and there when she saw a prettier shell. She laughed at the gulls who squaked over her head, then scared them by flying up to meet them in the air.

Joyau felt lighter and more free than she had in many eras. She felt as free as a bird. Finally she came back to the ground, and walked back up to her possessions. She had a secret in her heart. A secret she would reveal to no other person, but one which made her heart swell with joy whenever she thought of it.

His hair was slowly being pushed by the wind as it gently touched his skin as he looked out towards the sea. Saka, Prefect of Demios stood like a statue wacthing the waves crash along the shore not really thinking about anything, just letting his elfish mind be at peace for once as he let nature warp itself around him.

Some say he would do better being an Druid but sadly he dealt with the elements and was also somewhat of a healer at times even if nothing really came to his skills. He knew nothing of the law yet he was the cities Prefect and yet no one really questioned it nor his age for he was a child in his race's eyes yet an adult in humans.

He was not bored just waiting, waiting for what he did not know maybe a sign, maybe just nothing.

It was a cold but peaceful day on the shores of Demios. Out at sea, a storm could be seen, its dark clouds pressing heavily upon the water. But on the island, where Joyau and Saka were, the closest thing to a storm were chill winds and the salty spray of the waves. Seagulls flew here and there, diving into the water and emerging with fish in their beaks. The plants that grew by the shore rustled soflty, providing serene background noise for those who came to the beach to walk and think to themselves.

Yet something was out of place. Above the cold winds and cries of the birds overhead, there was something not right. A noise which did not fit in with the peaceful surroundings.

"Help... Help..."

The soft voice, barely above a whisper, seemed to be coming from further down the shore. To anyone who ventured closer, there was the wreckage of a boat. The splintered mast had torn through the sails, and the body of the ship was completely torn apart. Planks and fragments of crates lay here and there. It had been a good-sized ship, enough to hold five men and cargo. Now it would hold nothing more.

The wood was still wet, but the top of the mast that stuck into the air was dry. It must have been here for some candlemarks.

And from the wreckage on the shore came that cry...

"Help..."

The wind had picked up and Joyau was cold. She picked up her coat and was putting it on when she heard a faint voice from down the beach. She picked up her book and medic case and put it on her shoulder. Hearing the sound again, she decided to fly down and see if she could find out from where the voice came. She saw another person on the beach, a young man. She didn't pay much attention to him because she wanted to find out where the call for help was coming from

Flying down the beach she saw up ahead the wreckage of a boat. She wondered if it was recent for the mast seemed dry, however, she flew in that direction. She had just reached the wreckage when she heard the voice again. It was coming from the wreck.

As Joyau got closer, she could see that the boat was in incredibly bad shape. It looked as if it had been destroyed while at sea, then washed up on shore. Driftwood littered the sand around the wreckage. If the boat was this bad, who knew what condition its crew was in?

Speaking of which, a hand reached out from beneath a heavy plank, waving slowly. It looked as if it was at the last of its strength.

"Help, please... Is anyone there?" The desperate voice and the hand seemed to belong to the same person.

The young sprite hovered over the boat, a mass of broken planks. The boat looked as if it had been crushed like a giant hand, though it was probably still at sea when it began breaking up. She had heard of strange weather here so maybe the boat had been caught up in its own personal sunaimi and thrown upon the sand like a broken doll. Joyau was so small that she despaired of trying to find something in the wreckage. Just then the voice of someone calling. Someone in great paid and anguish. Finally, she saw a hand emerge. She flew down to the wreckage and grabbed the person's hand.

"My name is Joyau, I am a medic," she said looking around to find someone near enough to help her rescue the person from the wreckage. She tried to push the heavy plank aside but she knew she needed help also. Joyau looked around and cried out as loud as a little sprite could. "Help, Help, there is someone here who needs help." She cried.

The beach, unfortunately, was empty. No one on Demios went to the beach when a storm was coming, as the violent and unpredictable nature of the island's weather meant that bad weather could arrive with extreme swiftness and dire consequences. As such, Joyau's cries for help would go unheard.

The hand, however, waved a bit faster. "A medic? Thank Diana. Please...I'm...." The voice was momentarily muffled. "...bleeding pretty badly, I think." It was a man's voice, exhausted and barely comprehensible, and it stopped abruptly at the end of the sentence.

The plank was desperately heavy. Although Joyau was pushing as hard as she could, it was only enough to move the end of the plank a foot or two to one side. That was enough, however, to reveal the rest of the arm, as well as the man's head, which was sheltered in a space made by several other boards. The rest of the man's body was under more wreckage, and out of sight.

There was a nasty, jagged cut the length of his arm, and it went down to the bone. It was still bleeding, and it was clear that the man had lost a good deal of blood. He might have been forty ordinations, a human, and his slightly leathery face showed that he had spent his share of time in the sun. He was pale now, however, and breathing shallowly.

He turned his head to Joyau, his brown eyes somewhat out of focus. "Ah..." He quickly trailed off into mumbling, and then closed his eyes.

Joyau finally pushed the board back far enough to see that it was an injured man. She saw the huge wound on his arm immediately. "I know you can't move to get yourself out of their, and there is noone around, but I can treat your arm wound immediately." Before she could start working on his arm, he seemed to pass out. Immediately Joyau took the Shephard's Purse ointment out of her medic kit, noticing that she was almost out of it. There was enough to staunch the bleeding on the man's arm. She then took her vial of "All-heale" out and dabbed it on the wound also. At least he would not bleed to death from that wound now. She pulled out bandages and tried to dress his wound. She really needed to give him stitches, however, she had only tried that once on a soldier and then she had someone to help her. Besides the man was positioned inside the wreck to where she would have trouble manuvering with a needle and thread. She bound his arm as tightly as she could and then took his pulse. It was too low and his respirations seemed to be so shallow they were barely noticeable. She knew he was probably going into shock and if he had any other bleeding wounds he might die before she could get him out.

Again, she looked around on the beach for someone to help her.

The bleeding did indeed stop as Joyau applied the various ointments and dressings. There was little response from the man himself; as Joyau had surmised, time was of the essence here.

There was one ray of hope, which was that because there had been a shipwreck, the odds were that someone, someone might be willing to chance the elements enough to see what had happened. And indeed, as Joyau was finishing up her bandages, two men from the City Guard came over the hill toward the beach. They took a look at the wreckage, and then dashed towards the sprite.

"What happened?" one of them called. The other was busy moving the planks away from the wounded man. Soon, the unfortunate fellow was out from under the boards. Curiously, there were no other bodies -- little sign, indeed, that anyone else had been aboard the ship.

The man was still unconscious, and his condition looked even more grave. He was almost white now, and his skin was slightly clammy. One leg had been crushed by the plank, and shards of bone stuck up through the destroyed skin.

(Sorry for my wait, jumping back in thanks to Whisper)

Saka who had just wacthed from afar due to he never rushed in and saw that the cute spite had a good handle of things but was near her as his guards came. His guards due to he was the Prefect of Demios and they did go to him.

"His leg is broken rather badly, Setting it might not be the best cure but I rather not take it off like my teacher would had done. Odd I did not hear anything about boats leaving the docks nor any shipments due to the weather." He said aloud at the end as he bent down looking at the leg.

More then one spot looked broken due to the mutibone sticking out of damage skin. It was something Saka did not like to see due to the fact of the man losing the leg or his life. "Anyone have any herbs on them?" He said as he remembed his lessons of herbs.

Finally help did arrive and Joyau was dismayed when she saw the unconscious man's leg. She did not have any way to help him with his injuries unless she could set his leg. She did have some dittany in her medic bag and splints. Those would have to do until he could be transported to the hospital.

Joyau saw another young man beside him. "Are you a medic also," she asked. When he asked about herbs Joyau opened her bag, "I have some dittany which will take the bone fragments out of his wound, however, you will have to help me put a splint on his leg. His leg will need to be amputated if we cannot get the fragments out and get it set. I have all-heale also which will heal the wound more quickly.

Joyau pulled out the dittany and poured it over his leg. Within a few moments the bone fragments came to the surface. She picked them out with her probe. When the fragments were all removed she turned to one of the men and asked if he could hold the man. "I am going to have to pull his leg straight so the bone will go back in place." She turned to Saka, "would you help me since you are a medic also."

Joyau took the man's heel and began twisting his leg until it was straight, then she pulled it as hard as she could with Saka, trying to get it to get into alignment. "I don't know if the leg can be saved, but this is as good as I can do out here."

She pulled splints out of her bag and applied them to the leg. "Hold these will you," she asked Saka, "while I get out the all heale for the wound. After pouring All heale on the wound, she took strips of bandage out of her medic kit. She wound the bandages around the splint until it was tight.

Looking at Saka she smiled a little, "Thanks for your help." To the others on the beach she said, "this man has lost a lot of blood and is probably going into shock. He needs to get to a hospital as soon as possible. I have done all I can do for him here."

The dittany did what it was supposed to do. Then one of the guards nodded to Joyau and held the wounded man firmly as the healer began to work on setting the leg.

He cried out in agony as Joyau moved it back into place. The bones did not move cleanly, and it was clear that his knee was not merely broken, but shattered. Nonetheless, it went back into something resembling its original position. With Saka and Joyau working together, the splints were quickly in position after the all heale was applied.

Nonetheless, he was in grave condition. One of the guards had already gone for help, and soon he and another man were coming back over the beach with a stretcher. They put the man on and quickly got ready to move him away. From the look on his face, he didn't have much time.

"We'll get him to a hospital as quickly as we can. Thank you for your help," a guard said to Joyau and Saka.

Joyau felt helpless as she realized the man's leg had to be amputated after all. The knee was shattered and there was no other way. The man was in shock and probably would not make it to the hospital alive.

She hung her little head in frustration, tears seeping out her eyes, knowing she was not experienced enough to help him further. She turned to Saka and spoke, her voice wavering with emotion, "I'm only a novice Thaum, a Master might be able to help him, or a Master surgeon. Do you know of one close by? I am new to the city so I do not know anyone."

If Saka didn't know an answer, there might not be one to be had. The guard who was speaking to Joyau shook his head sadly. "Because Demios is such a small island, our options are somewhat limited. We don't have the resources other, larger places do. I don't know of anyplace outside the hospital that could help."

The men with the stretcher lifted the injured man and began carrying him up the dunes. There was a cart at the nearest road, which would transport him to the hospital, if he made it there alive. The guard watched them go, and then shook his head again.

"I don't know if he'll live. But without your help, he wouldn't have had any chance at all, and for that, we thank you."
