Curiosity and the Cat (Reilly)
5th Cycle of Melora, Winter XV
It was a lovely winter brightening in Demios. Well, lovely for Demios, anyway. It was almost springtime, so the trees were just beginning to show signs of life again after four months of winter. The sweet smell of the sea settled upon the city like a delicate perfume. Street vendors pushed carts of roasted chestnuts down the quaint cobblestone roads. Demiosians bundled up in scarves and coats walked along, glancing hopefully at the sky and praying that it wouldn't rain.
It was a wonderful time to be out and about.

Lovely for Demios was right, Reilly thought as she exited the front door of her small home. Although the girl had made her home here, and had finally met some people that she liked, she still had never grown to love this out-of-the-way hunk of rock stuck out in the middle of the ocean.
Nonetheless, it wasn't a bad brightening, even if it did look like the rain might come. Reilly locked her door, and then stepped out into the street. She didn't have any immediate plans, since the Sculptures & Charms shoppe was closed today. She might go shopping, or she might go to the Leap of Faith. Or, conversely, she might just go to the ferry dock and wait to see if any cute boys were going to show up to visit the island today. Better to get dibs on them immediately if that were the case, after all.
Anyway, the shapely half-elf walked languidly along the side of the road, keeping her one good eye always open for any cute boys she might pass. Or for anyone handing out free alcohol, though the odds of that were somewhat less.

Reilly's wishes were granted at once... well, almost. But it was better than she might have hoped for.
A 20-something young man with a scarf bundled thickly around his neck was pushing his cart down the road. He wore fingerless gloves on his slender hands, which were dark like the rest of his skin. It was the sort of deep tan that comes with being born and bred in a place that is eternally sunny, and his sun-streaked brown hair and bright green eyes confirmed that suspicion.
"Goodbright, miss," he said cheerfully through her through the muffling scarf. There was an intoxicating smell coming from his little cart, which was also radiating waves of heat. A grungy-looking fat cat sat atop the cart, which might not have been completely sanitary... but what the heck. It smelled good enough that Reilly would want to get as close as she could to the cart too.
"How is the brightening treating you? Are you hungry, cold perhaps?" His lovely baritone voice was touched with a foreign accent, lending him an exotic and exciting air. His green eyes regarded Reilly with a mysterious glimmer.

Well, that wasn't bad, Reilly thought, as the boy called out to her. She paid little attention to the cat, but didn't even bother trying to hide the attention that she was paying to the boy's complexion and eyes.
"Well serale there," she purred. "I'm doing well enough, but I think my brightening just got a lot better. And I'm a little cold, and a little hungry, but not so cold or hungry that I couldn't stay here and talk to you for a while, if you'd like."
She punctuated this statement with a flirtatious bat of her eyelashes, and she turned her head so that she could see him better with her good eye. "By the way, my name's Reilly," she added. "I don't remember having seen you around here before. Are you from Demios?"
She assumed, given his accent and appearance, that the answer was no, but it seemed like a good way to keep the conversation going. And Reilly was indeed interested in keeping the conversation going. It looked like she wasn't going to have to go all the way to the docks after all...
