Wandering the forests? - Selegon

The city was stone, smooth white marble that would hurt the eyes if the sun ever shone brightly. Fortunately the light was muted by the ever present clouds keeping the light to a level that was comfortable with these elves whose heritage loomed always in their actions. Light bred elves would be uncomfortable in this city of stone; its splendour could not be denied, yet it showed a love of the stone itself. That wasn't to say that there were not parks and greenery in the city, for there were, but it was much more like a human city where the greenery was decorative. In truth, many of the parks were a concession to the fae who visited the city in numbers from the surrounding forest and who were often horrified by the bleakness of the dead stone.

Near the main gate was one of these, a small area bounded by trees and thick hedges. Once into the park, past the marble columns marked the entrance and down the small step onto the grass, the sights and sounds of the city faded. The bordering trees and hedges shut all but the occasional glimpse of the surrounding city away. Its proximity to the gate meant that there was a good deal of the forest life that entered in terms of small animals and birds. The trees themselves were full of movement; birds and fae in equal numbers it seemed and the central open area of grass echoed with the calls of children as they played games of tag and ball.

Not far in from the entrance and sitting with his back against a tree was an elf, his maturity clear as much from the way that he moved as from the silver that had almost replaced his once fair coloured hair. A pack was placed close by, a short bow, unstrung, bound along one side by leather straps. The elf sat with legs outstretched, his eyes watching the games that the children played while his hands were busy, spilling small chips of wood away from his knife, each small shaving defining the thin piece of wood closer to the spoon shape it already resembled.

One of the children's balls came rolling up to him. The child said, "Excuse me mister, could you get my ball please?" Selegon nodded and whiped the wood shavings off of him and handed the ball to the kid and said, "Here you go little master" Selegon said smiling. He could tell that the child was happy and playing. The sun's bright light periced the eyes of anyone who was not used to it. He kept shaving the peice of wood and carved it into what looked like a bow, but there was still much work to be done to it. He stood up and grabed the bow shaped item and walked into the woods. He threw up his hood and wondered the woodlands. He could see the fae and the birds flying from tree to tree. The day seemed to be perfect in most respects. Selegon knew the wilderness was the only thing he wanted to know more about and thats all he knew.

The brightening had dawned fair, that was true enough and as Selegon walked deeper into the trees, the sun penetrated through the canopy, giving the air a warmth that contrasted strongly with the chill he felt as he walked through the shadows. The deeper into the trees he walked, the fewer were the people that he saw and the fae also grew less, since he was leaving the area where some of them lived in a small colony carved into the trees themselves.

But he was not alone, he was too close to the city for that, and it wasn't long before he passed close to another elf. This one sat on a tree trunk and tied the laces that held his soft leather boot on. He glanced up at Selegon and nodded, taking in his gear.

You off hunting then? The elf asked, his voice low yet simple enough to hear.[/b] He finished tying the laces and looked up square at Selegon, awaiting his answer.

Selegon kind of jumped at the unexpected voice he heard. "No and yes. No I'm not looking for something specific, but if I do see something I may hunt it. Why are you?" Selegon asked him and raised his left eyebrow slightly. He sat down at a tree trunk just across from the other elf. He pulled out his carving and began to carve the shape of a bow again. With every scatch on the wood shavings came off. The carving was begining to look like a bow. He carved out two notches at the top and bottom. He picked it up and held it close to his face to examine it. "Looks like it needs to be smoother on the handle." Said Selegon. He was not really talking to anyone, but he was trying to get the attention of the elf. "The name is Selegon Merith, your is?" Selegon waits for his responce.

The elf shrugged slightly at the non-committal answer to the question of hunting. The name is Jan'thor and that is a pretty enough piece of carving that you have there. The elf examined it somewhat critically as best he could from where he sat.

As for me, my intentions are not hunting as much as they are to get out of the city for a few brightenings. It's a nice enough place but it seems to close in on me after a while and I get a hankering for the feel of leaves under my feet and the sway of branches overhead.

You are welcome to join me if you wish for the first part of my journying. I have a pool in mind that I intend to camp by this evening, but I'm in no special hurry and company would make a change.

Selegon looks at him and says, "Sure, I'll cme with ya'." Selegon stood up and threw his bow in his pack and said, "Show me where to go." He ran his hand though his hair. Selegon looked at him waiting for a answer.

The elf nodded in reply pushing himself upright from the log and stretched for a moment before reaching down and picking up his pack. He looked curiously at Selegon as he put the pack on and then set off into the forest at an easy walk, feet making almost no sound as he did so, elves were naturally quiet and yet the Esh'lahier did not quite have the knack normally that their light born cousins did in the open air.

The walk proceeded at a steady pace and then the elf made conversation and he was clearly curious regarding his companion. I can't say that I have seen you around, are you only recently arrived?

Selegon brushed the hair from his eyes and said, "Yes and no. I was born in Silrosia and came here, finding out later that I had dark elven bloodline. Half acctually and I'm half light." Selegon looked back at him and said, "What about you?"

Dark Bomee is an upstanding Citizen
Jan'thor did wonder in the back of his mind how the elf before him of mixed origin had survived for so long in the city without be cast into the Forest of Light to become a victim of its maze for an eternity. Had time passed for so long that his race and the people of the city forget to keep it strictly Esh'lahier based and fae/dark fae based?

Though it didn't matter, they were in the outskirts of the city, the entrance now revealed, for once one knew how to navigate the trials, one could always re-find his place to the city.

"Then we shall move before the darkening commences, I feel like we've been talking for an eternity." The aged elf had a sense of humor. In his patterns, he had a sense of eternity and though it did not begin to bore him, he often grew tired.

"The pool I heard can bring dreams. Only the lucky can see it and drink from its body, as a privilege granted by the Forest of Light... Do you dream, Selegon?" The elf asked with inquisitive eyes.

Selegon looks at the elf and raised a eyebrow then began to crack a smile. "Well, doesn't every natural elf. Just because I'm mixed does not mean I do not dream." Selegon looked up at the tree tops and sniffled his nose. Selegon was quiet mostly and rarly interacted with anyone outside of his fraction of freinds he has. In which case he has little. "So, uh, whats your name? Selegon looked at him as they began to walk again. He felt no nervousness at all. Which was weird for him to talk to a stranger and not be.

Jan'thor walked carefully yet now opened out the pace a little while he considered the last question. It seemed that not only were strangers being allowed more openly in the city but this half-breed seemed to suffer what seemed like deficiences with his memory. Jan's memories stretched back over the eras without any noticeable degredation and yet it was only a short while ago that he had given his name.

He took it philosophically and wondered what other surprises this elf might have in store for him with strange questions and behaviours. Of course coming from Syl'rosia was explanation in itself for those elves were ever degenerate and overly proud of themselves.

The name is Jan'thor, my friend. It's good to hear that you dream, but as I was saying the pool to some is just water, a place to set camp and hunt, but for those whose minds are open, you would know that the forest is alive. But I'll say no more on the pool for either you will or you won't when we get there. His feet moved soundlessly as they moved out into the forest itself now, the city left behin them.

So tell me of yourself Selegon. What brings you out into the forest?

Selegon gave a strange look toward Jan'thor and paused. "Well, I'm here because, to be honest, I cannot stand the ways of the light elves, and to think that I have that bloodline in my veins almost sickens me. So I left Syl'rosia because this place is where I belong, and here I shall remain." Selegon glances at Jan'thor and asks him, "Um so, how about you..?" Selegon pasued once more gleeming little pointless thoughts through his head. He had nothing better to do. The usal walking of the forest bed until the day fall, and hunting at night was getting old. Selegon really just wants to become the best at whatever he becomes. "You know...Nevermind..." Selegon was going to say something but did not.

Jan gave a wry shrug at his companions vitupurative response and continued to walk for a moment in silence.

Well I can't say that I blame you for your feelings there my boy, never trusted those damn lightborns. Always so cocky and high an mighty they are, yet they are no better than us, not by a long way and what have they to boast about? Accident of birth, thats all.

He glanced over at Selegon and raised an eyebrow. So, what do you bring to the city, other than yourself? I've no doubt that it will take time for people to accept you, what with that hair and all shouting out your heritage. I've spent enough time out in other cities to have my fill of prejudice, so I don't bother with that anymore, but unless you intend to join me in the forests I'm curious as to your intentions.

Selegon looked at him he almost felt a little immature and out of place. This elf kept reffering to him as if he was young and stupid, this not true, not at all. "My hair, talking about my heritage? You know..." Selegon almost gave a stern look for the first time in his lifetime toward anger and gave up, knowing its useless. "You care to know my intentions? Well, they simply are to just to become a surveyer of the land, at least thats what I call them, more so the art of a ranger." Selegon threw a serious look at him to show that he is not what this man may believe he is, young.

"You know, I am as well curious to know your intentions..." Selegon said that as he is leading himself into a thought, *He seems to be ok to me, no certain threat...Trust issues...* Selegon then glanced at the ground and kicked a rock into the leaves of the forest floor. Some how Selegon has thought more of a outcast in this town everyday, but still he remains. The amazing thought to conquer the diversity that may hold some back pushes Selegon to remain and prove to them all, that the breed of whom you are means nothing oppsed to what you can do.

A surveyor of the land? Jans eyebrow quirked upwards though there was no mockery in his face.

Well perhaps that lightborn blood in you will stand you in good stead after all. There are precious few in the city who have any feeling or any love for the forest. Oh they might claim otherwise but to deny our heritage is futile. He gave a short laugh, one look at that city back there will tell you exactly what makes them feel comfortable. Don't get me wrong boy, thats a beautiful city, but it would make a Sylrosian cry and not for joy. He seemed oblivious to any offense that his references to age might have on Selegon, but it was perhaps less personal than the younger elf might think for Jan was old enough that nearly everything seemed young, even the trees and the city itself fell into that category.

Now Rangers, yes the lightborn love their rangers, but I doubt there are more than a handful in the city who would even consider such a thing. He looked at Selegon speculatively. If you can channel that anger of yours into something useful then you might just make something of yourself. As for my intentions, well my intention was a bit of fishing more than anything else, a chance to get out of the city and into the forest. The forest is a chancy place you know even for us once you are off the marked paths, but I like it well enough and I think it has mostly got used to me for it tolerates my wanderings as it might not yours.

But if you are serious then perhaps I can teach you a thing or two that I've picked up over the patterns. The choice is yours for I'd not force it on you, but I'd not turn aside an excuse to be out here more than I might otherwise justify.
