Growing in thick stands in the shallows of freshwater lakes, iron reeds can grow up to a total length of around seven feet, tapering towards the tip. Approximately one quarter of their length is above the water. Their name comes from the strength of their stems, and they make excellent building materials for make shift huts by the lake, as well as other uses such as blowguns or fishing poles.
