Special Permission Characters

Special Permission Characters
How to apply to play one!

While most players opting to create characters on Aelyria have a vast choice of player character races to choose from, occasionally a player might wish to play a more unique race. To this end, there are certain sentient non-player races that will on occasion be allowed for regular PC gameplay. These NPC turned PC races are referred to as Special Permission Races (SPRs).

In order to be allowed to play one of these special permission races as a PC, a player must apply to the Directorate for SPR approval. Applying for one of these races in no way guarantees permission will be granted. The Directorate holds unique player characters to a higher standard of development than might be expected of a standard player characters, and because of this high standard, they expect a great deal of thought and planning to be put into special permission races. In addition, for a Special Permission Race to be played, there must be an up-to-date and comprehensive writeup available in the compendium. In some cases, the Creative Team may reserve the right to ask the applicant to improve any existing write-ups to bring them up to date on the current Directorate's high standards. Well thought out and elaborate applications very well could result in permission being granted for game play of these creatures, however certain factors outside of the application might be taken into consideration as well. How many of these types of PCs exist in the game already? Does the application fit the current mood and theme of the game? Will the granting of this permission negatively impact the rest of the playerbase? All these questions need to be considered, so submitting a well-thought-out and written application will in no way guarantee approval.

To apply for a SPR a player must complete the following steps.
  1. Fill out the special permission race application found below completely.
  2. Submit completed application in a help desk ticket.
  3. Wait 3 - 7 days for Directorate Review.
  4. Make any changes which might be suggested, if any.
  5. Resubmit application if required.
  6. Wait 3 - 7 days for final approval or decline.

Final approval may be made at completion of step three, but in case the Directorate requires revision, additional time and steps might be required (Step 4 - Step 6). The Special Permission Race Application can be found below. Please fill it out in its entirety. Be as thorough and complete as possible.

Special Permission Race Application

  1. Identify any PCs you've played before.
  1. Please provide the PC name you are interested in using.

  2. Please identify the special permission race you are applying to play. Indicate any documentation you will be using as a basis for how this pc should be played, what skills it has or should have access too, and if you feel it is sufficient to derive a PC from. If not, do you plan to rewrite or submit a writeup for supporting documentation? (If your submitting documentation or rewrites, they should be posted in the WF at the same time or before the application is submitted.)

  3. Provide a complete physical and mental description of the PC you intend to play. (ie..physical appearance, thinking process, personality quirks.. be as complete as possible)

  4. Outline your general goals for having this PC in gameplay. (Be specific and original.)

  5. If you are trying to play a race thats unbalancing or more powerful than other PC's starting off in the game, what are you going to do to equalize this imbalance? What aspect or angle will you take so that your PC is more on par with normal PC's starting out in the game? (Be original here... memory loss and curses are overdone.)

  6. Provide an in-depth lengthy writing sample to demonstrate the writing style and 'voice' of this proposed special permission race pc. (Set a scene, show a dialog, having a divine experience, demonstrate communication... roleplaying outside the box is just fine here.)

For clarity, I would suggest linking to the NPC races, not to the PC races, so that some new player does not accidentally apply to play as a Dorin or Katta.

Why not link to both then?

We took out the links to NPC races because people were commenting that by having a list it restricted WHAT they could apply for or that people were applying for 'other' than on the list and that seemed 'unfair'. We wanted to stress, by not having these links, that the Directorate was open to all sorts of SPC's and not just a limited accepted NPC grouping.

We've yet had anyone 'accidentally' apply for a normal PC race, and if we did have a situation like that, we'd carefully explain they are a PC race, and anyone is free to play one at any time.

The removal of the NPC list was the direct result of us trying to unrestrict any suggested 'limits' and focus more on pre-game character development as to convey the fact that we are truly open to a wide array of new ideas. The whole truth is, SPC's get approved via the strength of their application and development, not by who's applying. We don't even look at the names in most cases, but rather look at what the PC concept is, and if its frankly 'fabulous'. We approve about one of these a month on average (sometimes a lot more), and since the first of the year have only turned down two. Those applications (posted by the same player) were rejected due to lack of development and the PC stating they wanted to play a SPC because they wanted a 'powerful' PC.

When a SPC is approved, we take careful pains to make sure the character is equal to other starting characters and not overpowered in any way. Thats why we appreciate unique development situations that limit SPC's their full range of a race's known strengths... flaws, in these applications, are very handy and we love people building these into their applications.

So, if you have something in mind, be you a brand new player to the game, or an old wise veteren, feel free to apply. Just remember to give it enough 'character' (pun intended!) to make it stand out in the crowd... and do it for the right reasons (the story!) rather than PC advantage.

I hope that clears a few things up.

Im not sure why its a big deal, I went over the spell lists and discovered that any arcana class has the potential to allow you to transform yourself into basically anything you want within reason between journeyman and mastery.

Like necromancy with the lich etc.

I think neat races are fun, but need to be earned.

They are earned. It is earned on the application, not on any sort of in game experience. Not all of us want to learn arcana and want to play what we play for the uniqueness of the race and not for any merit, strength, or advantage. In truth, there are role playing disadvantages that force us to be dealt with such as racial dislikes or cultural misunderstandings. That is also a part of the uniqueness we seek. The objective is to draw people to this game, and frankly not everyone wants to be a standard elf, dwarf, or human. So we do earn the right to play the SPR; it is done via the application and not any in game bonus or companionship purchase.

I was just mentioning that arcana has options to do stuff like that also.

Which is why I do not understand why people gripe and cry and get there panties in a bunch over the special races.
