Initiate Elementalism (Vers, Private, Galdor)

Galdor felt the peace and tranquility of his clara vanish as he was thrusted back to the 'normal' plane. He was slightly discouraged but his teacher reassured him. He quickly returned to a meditative state and reentered his clara. As he was taught earlier. He focused again on the Arcalysis as his Vis begin to mingle with the Ara around him. Again the Arcalysis begin turning a brilliant shade of purple and he focused on this intimately to return to the elementalist plane. He found himself at total peace again. Yet, he hesitated on trying to decide on what type of element to choose from. He wanted to learn them all... yet he had to decide between water and fire. Suddenly with out much thought involved the image of fire came to his mind, and he began to channel the fire toward the arcalysis.

Reentering his Clara would not be a quick process, and it would take time, but if he had patience he would end up there. Once he managed to get back into it, he began to attempt to channel the essense of fire into his arcalysis reaction. It would take all of his focus to do this, and he would need it, for fire was hard to control. Luckily though, being an elf, it did make it much easier for him to accomplish things. He could see the fiery red essense flowing into his arcalysis reaction, forming the Mana needed for the necessary Initiate spell his teacher was about to teach him.

Now that you have chosen your element, the element of fire, I want you to start to learn one of the first initiate spells you shall be taught. It is called Elemental Shock. Now, normally, it is an offensive spell used to deliver a shock into your opponent, but we will just be using a dummy for this. I want you to concentrate on the dummy at the far side of the room, and attempt to force the Mana into it, using a spell casting technique called Evocation. By evoking the mana into the dummy, you should cause it to catch on fire, delivering direct damage to it... Now, lets see you try this," she said, and then allowed him to attempt it, awaiting the results...

Galdor focused on the element of fire, he wanted it to flow into his arcalysis reaction and create mana. As he did this he switched his focus to the dummy, envisioning it catching on fire with the mana. The mana reaction was astounding to Galdor, and if he could, he would sit there and watch it.

As Galdor released the fire mana he had created, he would slip out of his clara, just in time to see the dummy catch on fire. Albeit it was only a small fire, it was a fire nonetheless. His spell had worked, which was good. As he increased in his proficiency, the damage of the spell would be more and more severe. Ros smiled as she watched the spell unfold. Reaching into her own clara she crafted a similar spell, but instead, made it of water, and put out the fire on the now blackened dummy.

"Very good job!" she said, and then looked towards him. Thinking about what to do next, she looked towards him, and then said, "Now, i want you to repeat the spell, and this time use the other essense that's mainly used in it, water. This way, you can see the results of both. What should happen, is once you evoke the mana into the dummy, it should have a small explosion of icicles popping out of it... try that one, and then you will need to go home and rest to restore your Vis..." She then sat back, and awaited to see the results, and how Galdor would craft the spell once more...

Seeing the dummy erupt in flames was astonishing to Galdor. He never knew that such power existed in him, considering that everyone he ever knew either left him or told him he would amount to nothing. If only they could see him now! His teacher quickly exstinguished the flames that surrounded the dummy. The remains where blackened and charred.

"Now, i want you to repeat the spell, and this time use the other essense that's mainly used in it, water. This way, you can see the results of both. What should happen, is once you evoke the mana into the dummy, it should have a small explosion of icicles popping out of it... try that one, and then you will need to go home and rest to restore your Vis..."

Galdor nodded. He quickly returned to a meditative state and re-entered his clara. He again felt the peace and tranquility and seen his vis and the ara. He again controlled his vis to intersect with the ara, again for the third or fourth time today the vis and ara began to dance creating a double helical shape and turned purple and formed the arcalysis. He focused, but this time he focused on the elemental plane of water. During his focusing he forced the waterelement to dance with the arcalysis creating mana. As soon as he seen this happen he focused that mana onto the dummy, hoping to achieve what he had done with the fire.

Bad fortune, nothing happened, the spell failed. Professor Kinl shook her head and said, "I should not have told you to cast another spell. It is too much for someone of limited experience. From now on, there will be only one spell per brightening.

"I want you to go home and rest well. On the next brightening think about the spell with fire and practice it one time, Then on the following brightening I want you back here and we will repeat the spell with water. Be certain that you limit yourself only to the spell casting that I tell you to do."

Galdor for some reason did not get discouraged as he was thrust out of his meditative state. His teacher had told him to go rest and try again and the return the following brightening.

"Thank you professor, I will see you in a brightening."

Galdor returned to his room to rest and gather his strength.

Next Brightening

Galdor went to one of the practice rooms in the academy. One that looked like it had weathered the test of time. He could see that plenty of elementalist before him had been here practicing. Many of the dummy's were either moldy from water elementalist, scorched from fire elementalist, or just blown into tiny pieces. Galdor stood there for a few moments taking in the whole scene. He found a dummy that was fairly intact and set it up in the corner. He also found a pale of water to help put the fire out after he ignited it.

Standing there he went into a meditative state and entered his clara. He again felt the peace and tranquility and seen his vis and the ara. He again controlled his vis to intersect with the ara, the vis and ara began to dance creating a double helical shape and turned purple and formed the arcalysis. He focused on the elemental plane of fire. During his focusing he forced the fire element to dance with the arcalysis creating mana. As soon as he seen this happen he focused that mana onto the dummy, within seconds the dummy erupted into flames.

Galdor sat and watched it burn for a few moments, awe struck by the magnifcance of it all. Standing up just as quickly as he sat down he dumped the water on the dummy and put it out before it got out of control. He had not yet been taught how to control the fire once he started it.

He was proud of himself for having been able to produce fire twice in two brightenings. He wanted to do it again, but was instructed not to. Returning to get some food, Galdor sat and contemplated his adventure thus far, and the dream he had during his unbinding ritual.

Following Brightening

Galdor returned to class, rested, relaxed, and proud of his accomplishments. He seen his professor and smiled "Good morning professor. How are you?"

Professor Kinl smiled as Galdor returned finally, and then looked towards him to answer his question. "I am good today, how are you doing Galdor?" she asked. After he answered, her water elemental popped out from behind her, and then said, "Are you ready for today? You'll be using my element of water..." Ros smiled as the water elemental slithered up onto her shoulder again. "He is right, the dummy is right there, and whenever you're ready, you can proceed..." she said, and then awaited his actions...

"I am doing pretty decent, thanks for asking. Let us hope that I can do this with water again." Galdor commented hopeful.

He procedded to return to the meditative state for which was becoming so apt at doing. His clara was tranguil, he enjoyed it here. Immediately he seen his vis and the ara that surrounded him and the room. He made his ara dance with the vis creating the double helical shape, with in moments it turned a fabulous shade of purple and the formation of his arcalysis was complete. He proceded to focus on the elemental plane of water. As he focused he manipulated the water element to dance with his arcalysis to form mana. Forcing the newly created mana onto the dummy, he was hoping for it to do something...anything...

As Galdor began to work with the weaves of arcana around him, he would soon find that it wasn't working as well as when he used the element of fire. The water mana unfolded inside the dummy, and as the dummy expanded, the spell finished, and it exploded outwards, pouring water everywhere. Ros looked at it almost not expecting that to happen, but then she turned to Galdor and smiled. "Well, the first try is never to successful, especially when working with multiple elements. But for now, we shall let you rest for the brightening... and oh yes, that reminds me, i have something for you to read this brightening, it's the treastise on arcana..." she said, handing him the book. "Take the rest of the brightening to read it and study it... and we shall continue with another spell tomorrow..."

Galdor took the book and went to his room. He spent much of that brightening reading over this book. He found much of it intriguing, though, some what wordy. As he continued to read he found his candle quickly burning out. Looking outside through his window, he noted the night sky was cloudy, though some wifts of night sky with stars could be seen. It then hit him, this was the only place he could call home. He owned nothing anywhere in Aelyria and had no friends at all. He truely was alone with his thoughts and his feelings. Imaden School of Higher Learning is what he had. This and his weak ability to perform fire arcana.

As he got lost in his thoughts and in "A Treatise on Arcana", he feel asleep at his desk...listening to the sounds of the night in Vers.

The Following Brightening

Galdor woke with a sudden fright, looking out the window he noted that the sun was higher in the sky than what he had thought the instant he awoke. He was late to his class. What would Professor Kinl do to him for his tardiness? Running a quick hand through his hair, which had managed to come undone through the night, he dashed to his classroom.

Several moments later Galdor arrived if somewhat breathless for his lesson. "Forgive me Professor...I...I...I overslept."

Professor Kinl sat in the room, and looked out the window towards the sun. As she did, she thought, he's late, i wonder where he could be. Yawning a bit, her elemental looked around, and then went over. Suddenly the door opened, and in came Galdor. Smiling, happy that he made it instead of skipping, she said, "Welcome... it's okay that you overslept, i personally should have done the same, considering i'm a bit tired. Anyways, are you ready for the lesson today?" After she asked that, and gained her answer, she took out some paper, and a quill for him.

"What i want you to do today, if you read that book last night, is write a brief summary of each section, and describe what they mean to you, or how you interpreted them. Then we'll continue with a spell for the day..." she said, and then awaited his response as she handed him the parchment, quill, and ink.

Accepting the quill, ink, and parchment Galdor started to rack in brain on what he read the night before. The quill moved along the parchment causing a scratching noise as he wrote.

Magic:
There are many skilled people who can create things that most man connot. Thus they give birth to a potentially wonderful or disastrous thing. This is what we call magic. Many skills are considered to be magical by the average person. Golemcrafting, Alchemy, Shamanism, Gadgeteering are able to fashion magic into the craft. There are also some that are banned by the Empire and or the local government. There is also a complement to magic, and this is more widely and openly used in Aelyria...this is what we call Arcana.

Arcana:
This is the best and most explored of magical skills, and it has yet to reach its limits. This, unlike other magical skills, is not kept in secret. It is usually taught to those who can learn it, and can afford to learn it. Mages, sadly are not a common sight in smaller locales. Every person is born bound and have to be unbound by other mages, least they can not become mages themselves. There is only one in a thousand that can be successfully unbound. This is because most people have some kind of mental block that is complex and or to hard to break for even the most skilled of mages.

To become a mage is usually hereditary. A famliy that raises a mage in each of its generation are called gemblooded. There are the acceptions though to those of non-gemblood. These people are usually, but not always, more talented in aracanic ability. This talent does not suggest they can cast stronger spells, arcanic talent usually reflects the speed in which they can learn the arcana. Specific races have more mages than other with a higher success rate of being unbound, while some races will not have any mages for eras. Arcanic talent does not depend on the race though.

Arcana is usually taught at Academies and other larger organizations. This is due to the number of Masters needed for higher level promotions. Though there are some lone Masters that will teach individually. There is yet no standard as to what is suitable as a teaching locale. This being said some druids prefer to teach in groves, were as theaumaturgists like to make use of hospitals. Necromancers are still a hunted trait as their craft is illegal, and thus they have to train in secrecy. The cost of such studies range from locale to locale and can be several hundred crowns for the first lesson to several thousands in the higher classes. And there are some places that teach it for free, be it rare.

The form of teaching varies from master to master. They can choose to train many pupils at once or just hold individual classes, especially if the student shows to be talented. Larger Academies where there are more students present, Masters have imparted the spells to new students and leave all the teaching and explaining to reliable Adept level mages. Many students remain with the same Master and or Academy throughout all the ranks, but there are some that have training under a different Master for whatever reason.

Elements:
Everything is made up of an essences. Different amounts of different essences make up different items. An example is water found in this worls is not made up of just pure water essence. Nothing is completely pure, it is interwoven with other essences to a small or larger scale.

Certain amounts and patterns of essences make up on object. This is known as Vis. There is also a Mage's Vis or Personal Vis and this is used to interact with Arcana. This is the mages power, which is spent to cast or create spells. The Vis grows with each promotion, and hences advanced mages can create more spells. This recovers with rest and sleep...but if one tries to exceed it to the last drop it can cause severe headaches and fainting.

There is also Ara which is energy that flows in our world. Around, inside, and through objects, beings...everything. Ara is made up of all kinds of essences. Ara though is unorganized and unstable essences with no pattern or structure that is finite. This is why Ara flows freely leaving no impact on the environment. Yet there is the rare occasion and place where Arcana has been used a lot, the Ara has an impact. This is because mana dissipates into Ara when a spell ends. When Ara can impact the environments Vis this is called Arcane Contamination.

Mages reach a state of mind called Clara through Meditation, they can sense all of these components. Even though mages can sense ara and vis around them, they can't interact with them directly and need to bring a third component called Mana shaped in spells or arcane items. Mana can be acquired through a process called Spell Casting where the mage goes through various steps to bring it into the Material Plane and shape it into the spell they want. Mana is made up of a single and pure essence and can not be tinged by another, these pure essences can only be found in the Essence Planes.

Clara:
This state allows mages to sense and interact with Arcana, arcane objects can be told apart from normal objects that are invisible to the eye and also reveals mages because the Personal Vis has been modified, though initiates are harder to tell apart because the modificiation is minimal at best..

To maintain and reach clara for a long time is not easy. This is why calming enivronments, scents, and drinks or even wands are used to ease the task. But with practice and training mages can get and hold Clara while running, talking, or sometimes when fighting. Though, when a mage casts a spell they lose Clara and have to meditate all over again to cast spells without exception.

There is though the Staff of Arcana that allows a mage to have constant Clara, but the creation of this item is complicated and can only be done by Adepts or higher.

Spheres:
There are eight known spheres of arcana that mages can train in. Each sphere has its own essence and no mage can interact with that essence without first being trained.

A sphere defines the way of life for a mage. The eight spheres are Druidism, Elementalism, Mysticism, Ikos, Necromancy, Song, Socery, and Thaumaturgy.

Professor, please excuse me but I am going to shorten this down a bit.

Arcanomechanics is the study of Arcana and how it works.

Spell Creation can be performed at Adept level.

Teaching at each level a mage is taught new spells and new techniques.

There are five levels of proficiency. Initiate, Apprentice, Adept, Master, and Archmage.

Initiates learn Meditate, Focus, Channel, Imparted Shaping, and Dispel.

Apprentice learn Circle of Arcana, Activation, and Reshape Mana.

Adept learn Imbue Spell, Unbind, Create Spell, as well as Abjuration, Alteration, Conjuration, Divination, and Evocation

Master learn Bind, Impart, Improvise, Enchant, and Promote.

Archmage learn Demote, Disempower, Evolve, and Ostracism.

Planes:
The Material Plane is the place where the Aelyrian Empire is located, including all other Empires.

Hedgemages:
Are mages who want to study more than one sphere, but they have to be complementary spheres to each other.

This is how I interperted the meaning of the book A Treatise on Arcana.

Galdor knew that towards the end it got weak, but his hand hurt and his head hurt from trying to recall the facts. He wasn't sure he wanted to do a spell today or not.

Ros took the parchment from him as he finished writing, and sat down near him to read it. Letting her eyes scan the paper, and taking a few moments to read the entire thing, she smiled, and looked up at him. "This is good for now, would you like to practice a spell today? We can just have you do the same one from yesterday with the element of water to work on it, so that you can gain a better grasp at it... then tomorrow you can learn a new spell, aside from this first one that you've learned..." she asked, and the water elemental sat there silently as well, awaiting a response from Galdor...

Galdor was turning his hand into a fist and then releasing it to uncramp it. He really needed to learn how to handle the water element. "Okay professor, I think I can handle trying to do another spell."
