[Fish Stick]

As the mana was created, and then the spell was cast, the light shown dimly upon the wall. But nothing happened. Nothing appeared, the wall did not open, or anything of the sort. No magical symbols appeared, nothing happened. The wisp circled around Lyssoryl's head, and then said, "Well, that didn't work..." As he remarked this, they could hear a screech coming from behind the wall, but after that, they heard silence. What was happening in the school of Mechanics?

Basking in the weak glow of his conjuration, Xyltha couldn't help but marvel at his creation. Even now, so many months since he first learned Arcana, he was still impressed that he - finally, after so many Patterns of daydreaming - was able to cast spells. Alas, that didn't seem to help much in this situation.

He looked around at his companions, disappointment clear on his face.

"I'm sorry, doesn't look like that did anything. Anyone with another suggestions? Light? Light? What kind of light? Sunlight?"

He glared at the wisp. Why did it have to be so difficult and forgetful.

Lyssoryl gave the wall a push and a jiggle, to make sure the hidden door had not come loose with no outword change in appearance. She didn't expect anything but she didn't want to not check and wind up feeling foolish later.

To Z'kron she said "You know, the duration of Bardic magic varies from spell to spell. Some last as long as you sing, others linger for quite a while. I only know the most basic spells myself."

To Xyltha she said "I doubt the wall opens to sunlight, or it would open every brightening. Perhaps moonlight? Were I designing such a feature, I believe I would make sure it was light that was under my control. Maybe we have to do something with the light? Shine a pattern on the wall, or have it come from a certain angle. I don't like to think that I am easily stumped, but off hand I can't think of a whole lot of different ways to interact light with a wall."

She gave the wall a careful examination, looking for any unusual markings or irregularites.

Xyltha nodded thoughtfully as the Cether spoke. She spoke with reason, and so the elf paid heed. He no longer thought her airheaded, as he had when they first met. Cethers were smart creatures - small, cuddly, like a pet - but still smart.

"True. Well, maybe it's nothing to do with shining light on it. What if it opens if we set something alight. Is there a torch nearby, or some sort of brazier? We could try setting that alight and see if that opens the door. Having that sort of mechanism would ensure some measure of control in opening and closing the "secret" door."

He looked around, his eyes surveying the immediate surroundings for signs of such a torch or brazier.

[Z'kron]

"All equally valid hypothesises. Or perhaps, it reacts to an absence of light. Who knows. But setting something nearby alight seems to be a reasonable idea. Or maybe a controlled non-arcane light is what they're looking for. Some of the people who design secret doors are slightly simple minded."
The druid looked at the stone, and prodded it hard with his carrot staff.
"Friend!" he intoned, with just a hint of a yell. A rather quiet yell, so no-one would hear. Especially not the golems.
"I try that on all the secret doors. Apparently, a whole subrace of Nilmani had voice activated secret doors responding to the word "friend" in elvish. They finally got eaten when orcs hired a translator."
A hmmphing sound.
"Anyway. Given the information, it's hard to do anything more than guess."
The druid sprinkled what appeared to be a tiny amount of powder- something from his alchemical dabblings, no doubt- on top of a carrot. Then, with a flick of the wrist, a spark flared; setting the head of the carrot aflame with a clean yellow-white light. He then glanced about, like Xyltha, for something obvious to light.
"Do you recall anything else which could aid us, master spirit?"

While Xyltha and Z'kron looked for an improptu torch, Lyssoryl busied herself making shadow puppets on the wall using the sorcerous light that Xyltha had created. With one hand, she mimicked a door opening, while the other cast the shadow of a bunny rabbit who waited for the door to swing wide, then passed through. Who knew what sort of silliness would be effective? Their only real hope seemed to be that there were only a limited number of things to do with light and a wall.

The shadowpuppets did not seem to work upon the door anyways. The spirit buzzed around, and shimmered a bit, but then said, "It is hard to remember life when you're dead. Perhaps it has to deal with the moonlight hitting the door in a certain fashion..." As he said this, it was perhaps a hint as to what exactly would open the door, seeing as how the word "friend" spoken in nimalni didn't open it.

Lyssoryl made her grumpy face at the wisp. "How many ways are there for moonlight to hit a door? With our luck, there will turn out to be dozens."

She turned to the rest of her party. "I suggest we reconvene here when the moon is about to rise. Someone should probably get a mirror in case we need to reflect moonlight about the place, and perhaps we might do well to own a golem entangling net or some such thing. I suppose naps might be in order as well, as we might be up all night. And are we going to need torches? Do you elvish folks see in the dark? I do a bit, or at least I see heat on things."

[Z'kron]

"A reasonable enough plan. Mirrors it is."
The druid smiled, taking an aside. A concept was beginning to occur to him, slightly unrelated to what was happening. But perhaps to follow up on later, on his own. He did have preparations to make, of course. As he departed to make these preparations, he threw a comment towards the spirit...
"Oh. And wisp? Are you happy as you are? That is; not being alive and not passing over. "

The wisp would have grinned if he had a mouth, but perhaps it was best that he did not try to. "I am perfectly content, say, do you have any more ambrosia with you?" he asked. It probably would be best to keep the wisp happy, lest he might disappear back to where he came from. A thought that would probably have crossed any person's minds who decided to summon a nature spirit for help. "i shall remain with the one whom carries the ambrosia until the moon rises. Then we shall see if we can't get this door to open up as it had for me once before..." the wisp then finished...

Lyssoryl pointed the wisp to Z'kron. "He is your host on this plane, and I do hope you enjoy your stay."

To the others she said "let's meet back here when the moon rises."

With that, she scurried off in search of a mirror, and possibily a net as well. She decided to leave looking for a light source to the elves, if in fact they needed one.

OOC: sorry to double post, but it's been two weeks and I was hoping to get this thread moving.

Lyssoryl returned to the wall at the appointed hour. She brought with her her hand mirror. She hoped it was large enough for the job, but had decided it was silly to purchase another one without knowing what was needed. She had decided to forego a net, as she did not really know how to throw one and would as likely as not have wound up trashing about on the floor in it like a mackeral. She did carry Babykiller, her new sword, but hoped she wouldn't have to use it.

She looked around for her companions. Hoping they would not be long.

Xyltha spent the rest of the brightening looking for a suitable branch. If indeed they would be facing up against golems, he doubted his puny dagger would stand to scratch the golems. At the least, a branch might help him trip them over while the group of adventurers endeavoured to escape.

As the darkening came, Xyltha arrived at the appointed site. He noted the Cether was already present - all dolled up and eager as always.

"No news from the other two yet?" He referred to Zkron and his wisp companion. He glanced up at the sky, searching for signs of the newly risen moon.

"No, I haven't seen hide nor ectoplasm of them. I did bring this mirror, I hope it is big enough. I see you brought a golem whomping stick. That was my initial intention as well, although I decided I would rely on my new sword here. Do not expect me to provide any miracles of martial valor with it, I am not experienced. My hope is that we shall be able to overcome the golems with a minimum of violence."

She looked around, tapping her foot. "Do you suppose we should try to get this door opened? Or should we wait for Z'kron?"

Xyltha approached the wall, still immutable despite their earlier efforts to gain entry. Even as the dark stole upon them, there were still no signs of the eccentric druid, nor his spirit companion.

"Perhaps it would be best to wait for them. Maybe that wisp will have remembered something more to help us open it. Besides, I would very much like the backing of the Druid, if a battle with the golems ever eventuate. I doubt very much my stick here would do much more than tickle them."

He looked up in the sky, gazing at the moon - then back at Lyssoryl, and the mirror she held in her hand.

"But while we wait, maybe we could try to see if we can open the door without them. If we succeed, we won't have to wait around much longer once he arrives. Try waving that mirror to capture the moonlight, and reflect it around the wall, Lyssoryl."
