[Location] D'Rinishad Academy of Arcana

Continued from here.

The darkness stretched and crawled over the expanse of desolate lands enveloping the lonely streets of necromantic Vortex. The city of shadows remained situated as it had for the past several centuries, undisturbed and emanating an eerie aura to it subsequent of the entropy and chaos that transpired within. There was seldom a flickering second in which the demesne grasped a moment of reprieve and tranquility, for the dangers that lurked the never slept nor tired. There was never a time in which crime was not at its' peak or occurring without delay. Such was the gravity of the curse of Vortex. The authorities were rarely prevalent amidst the citizens if not entirely absent. Houses remained locked up and gated through the late hours of the night and into the wee candlemarks of the morning. There was an omnipresence of precariousness and every Vortexian knew the sensation quite well. Thus was the reason and cause that many sought out modes of protection to ensure sanctuary within their own homes and for their families. For albeit safety was never a promised aspect in the realm, reassurance and confidence in one's own abilities to protect was often a substitute. One only had to learn how to do so.

The immense training compound remained situated near the perimeter of the city, exuding an air of wisdom and knowledge originating from the minds of those that resided within. The building expanded over a significant plot of land, from which a cobblestone pathway weaved and curved until leading to the main opening. Its' marble walls were caked in freshly coated onyx paint that testified to its' originality. Although the compound was relatively mundane save a few windows intermittently dispersed on the second floor, there was a sign fastened above the double-door entrance way that read; D'Rinishad Academy of Arcana. The words overlaid an intricate symbol foreign to most readers save of course the owner of the complex and perhaps a select few who recognized it as a clan emblem. Otherwise though, many presumed that the insignia was merely for the sake of decoration. The doors themselves were crafted from exotic red-oak wood and rested on hinges finely oiled and greased to prevent any shrill grinding noises. The handles on the doors curved in an intricate manner and were fashioned into the images of curving staves of arcana; quite a reasonable ornament considering the nature of the vicinity.

The interior of the training hall was regally designed in shades of red and purple hues. The carpet that glazed the wooden floorboards of the inside were predominantly scarlet save a few streaks of violet that portrayed enigmatic shapes. The main corridor was rectangular and on each end of the area was a sole doorway typically locked and utilized for training purposes. The instructors frequently inhabited these vicinities in order to enhance the solitude that students often required in order to concentrate on their studies. Two additional rooms like these flanked the receptionist's desk in the room which was settled against the back wall. The space on the walls which were not outlined by further entrances into other locations in the building were adorned with finely crafted illustrations. However, these portraits were not emblematic of traditional works of art but instead delineated a uniqueness unlike any witnessed on the face of Telath. Depictions of warped creatures were usually the focus of these canvas', most of which contained species that were strewn of different parts of other species. One notable piece framed on the wall overhead the counter was a Thelyri-elf with appendages from a saurid. The abomination wore a sick grin.

Comfortably settled behind a wooden desk and hunched over a stockpile of neatly stacked parchments was a petite Vysstichi boy who appeared completely delved in his work. The adolescent gyrated a quill pen betwixt his dexterous fingers, pausing temporarily to jot important notes upon the papers before him before continuing with the gesticulation. He seemed entirely devoted to his work and rarely glimpsed upwards to acknowledge the presence of any newcomers. However, there was always a peculiar smile on his face. Whether it derived from pure innocence or something humorous originating from the papers, though, was to be discerned by the viewer. Nonetheless, after he concluded reading over the materials on the desk he leaned back in his chair and set them on another small table nearby him. After he was confident that he'd not misplaced anything or would soon be forgetting where he stored parchments away, his crimson eyes flickered as they revolved upwards to recognize the arrival of a newcomer. "Serale! Welcome to the D'Rinishad Academy of Arcana! It's our pleasure to have you!" the Vysstichi's thin lips fanned out into a peculiar smile. It was obvious that his welcoming had been well-practiced and rehearsed.

Attached below one of the portraits behind him was an easily distinguished poster.

Drake stepped out of his new found home with an excited smile on his big head, today he was going to enroll into the Arcana academy that he had heard much about. Quickly locking the door he placed the key in his pocket and started to walk towards the rim of the city. Making his way between the busy crowds and the grim atmosphere the Giant payed as much attention to the people as needed in order to prevent an accidental stomping. Stopping from now and than to get directions even the unpolite and rude answers he recieved did not get in the way of his mood, not today.

Finally reaching the building Stormbringer took a moment to get a good look on the building, admiring its size compared to the other establishments in the city. Walking up the cobblestone trail Drake had to restrain himself from breaking into a ran. No need for haste, the building will not flee or disapear he thought to himself, but in a second thought he admitted to himself that if any building in Vortex was to suddenly vanish this was the obvious choise due to its inhabitents.

Stepping inside the Giant noticed the red shades of the interior, a color that was always to his liking. Serale sir, how are you this brightening? Drake asked with the same practiced tone as the dark elf, than glancing to the poster he took out his wallet and started to cound the fee he needed I wish to enroll into one of your classes, basic Elementalism to be exact. He finished with a smile and placed the said amount of money on the table.

The adolescent receptionist gaped at the hulking giant with utmost intrigue. Crimson eyes peered out from his sockets as they settled upon the immense newcomer that had recently emerged through the doorway. His expression quivered with an innocence that was magnified by his widening smile, which eventually parted long enough for his tongue to formulate the words necessary to articulate his greeting. He was anxious to attend to this new customer, and even more excited that he had the opportunity to converse with a giant. Banatarion, after all, was nothing more than a petite little boy. And his grandfather, the acclaimed sorcerer Ardanon, seldom allowed the child to leave his obligations and play with the other children that scurried about the streets. The little dark elf didn't mind his grandfather's chidings, but sometimes he grew irritated by this restraint. For some reason, though, the aged wizard had always stressed obeisance and discipline to an extreme degree. Banatarion supposed that it had something to do with learning his place in a society that was dominated by primarily women. Go figure.

"I'm quite dandy, sir!" the receptionist exclaimed, nearly hopping on the brim of his seat as he leaned forward to address the customer. His smile gradually waned though as Drake Stormbringer presented his query, which to the Vysstichi's dismay, was a request in which he wouldn't be able to permit. "I-I'm really sorry sir, but when the construction company was crafting that sign overheard for us, he messed up and added the elementalism class which we don't currently teach here. Unfortunately our school only has masters in the disciplines of mysticism and sorcery. Two outstanding spheres of arcana if I may so so myself!" the Vysstichi cheerfully added before frowning, "I'm really sorry. If you want though, I can enlist you in one of those classes for half the price. It's the least I can do. Otherwise, I'm afraid you'll have to look elsewhere for an elementalism instructor. I hear there's an academy in Paxia that offers such a course." Banatarion shrugged his slender shoulders. Though disappointed that this statement might lose a customer, the young Vysstichi was quite an honest young fellow. He helped when he could.

Drake couldn't help the feelings of disappointment. His luck must have been used up in his travels and now he was faced with a dilema; although he just arrived in Vortex he had already got quite fond of his new home, and did not want to leave for another city. On the other hand he was looking forward to studying the subject. I guess it wouldn't help if you checked whether things changed in the meantime would it? he asked the half rhetorical question while trying to figure out what to do next.

Placing his hands on the wooden table, carefull not to break it, he started to speak again. Well, no use moping about it right? I think I will take you up on your offer, Sorcery doesn't sound half bad. You sure you won't get in trouble because of this discount? Drake, not much more than a teenager himself in Giant terms, didn't want to see this elven boy punished because of him but the offer was to good to be ignored just like that. Oh, I almost forgot, how long is this course and when does it start?. He started returning the crowns to his wallet, still looking at the boy to see whether to leave the 125 coins or any other sum he would point out.

"Sure thing sir. Really sorry about that. My master has been searching for a capable master of the arts of Elementalism. But I'm sure you can imagine how difficult it is to find these sorts of people." Banatarion laughed and shrugged his slender shoulders, grinning innocently and standing up from his seat. His petite hand dexterously produced a quill pen and from the top of the table he retrieved a pad of ink. Giggling slightly, he dipped the feather into the vial and nonchalantly kicked his stool towards the wall where the poster was hung. Stepping onto the chair, he apathetically crossed out the words in the sign and replaced it with some letters and curly figures of his own. "Thanks for pointing that out sir. I knew I was supposed to do something. Grandfather would be really mad if I hadn't changed the sign even after he told me to do so all those times." the little boy laughed before coming back down from the chair and propping it back behind the desk.

"You want to enroll in the initiate sorcery class? Excellent! Master Danvan is a superb teacher!" Banatarion cackled childishly to himself and clapped his diminutive hands together. He leaned over the counter and grabbed for a blank parchment situated nearby him. Neatly gyrating the pen through his fingers, he brought the tip down and wrote down several characters and signed his name before extending the paper towards the massive giant, "Naw. Master Faust and me are tight. Like this!" the dark elf beamed and crossed his two fingers together, "The class shouldn't last more than a week. Maybe less if you're a good student, which I'm sure you are, sir! Take this letter to Master Danvan tomorrow morning around noon. He'll be in that room over there. I'll be here if you have any questions, but just in case I'm running errands or something." Banatarion grinned and filed away the coins into one of the registers nearby him. "Rest up and have a good day, sir! You'll be needing all your energy tomorrow!"

Laughing with the boy and watching him erase the board with a smile on his face, Drake felt a sudden sorrow that he hadn't had a chanse to make new freinds after he had left his tribe. Returning his attention to the figure that was basicaly his negative, dexturous quick and small, Drake nodded the thanks away; after all the boy had just saved him 125 crowns. Don't mention it, if anything I should be thanking you. By the way, I didn't happen to catch your name, my ears aren't as keen as your own.

Admiring the receptionist's handwriting before carefully putting away the letter he leanedtowards the desk again to hear the final explanation. Gotcha, thanks, you really helped me you know. Well I guess we'll meet again tommorrow won't we? Have a good brightening! he said while he backed up and walked slowly out of the structure, making his way through the busy city to his small home, in hope to get a much needed rest before he would continue to explore the city.

Late Optia, Era XI PF

OOC: Self modding. Poke me if something’s funny! ^_^

~~++====++~~

Fortune ebbed and flowed. High and mighty nobles found their family holdings stripped away and their dreams shattered in the space of cycles or brightenings. An early hailstorm could destroy an entire year’s harvest, leaving scores of small villages to starve during the long harsh winters that followed. Important merchant caravans disappeared without a trace in the vast, burning deserts of Arakmat, crushing a merchant’s last fragile hopes of economic success. But lest one think fate unduly harsh, Hsin could think of a dozen of examples when small coincidences and convenient discoveries had proved beneficial. His current position as Exquecher of Centripax, indeed, had been largely a fluke. How in the world he had managed to convince a hundred era old elf to place him in charge of several million crowns each era, the Kemite would probably never know. Some divine favor? Doubtful. Kaimelea bore his eternal gratitude and undying allegiance, but her real was the Plane of Dreams. She cared little for the politics of men—after all a nightmare was a dream by another name. Hsin had long ago ceased to question the currents of fate. He planned for the future, yes, but he did not lie awake at night worrying. There was precious little time before his soul would once again leave the Material Plane. The Kemite paid precious little attention to the drab and dreary streets as he walked briskly through the streets of Vortex toward the D’rinishad Academy of Arcana. Having already dwelt in the dark city for the previous autumn, Hsin knew enough not to dawdle in the streets. He had no desire to stay in the streets when the night fell.

He slipped into the lobby of the Academy with scarce a sound. A dark black coat hung from around his thin shoulders as he slowly walked toward the receptionist. Dark black eyes gazed with a strange mixture of curiosity and revulsion at the artwork painted on the wall. Terrible demons and creatures, but simply a work of art. Who had the daring to create such a picture? Than again, this was Vortex. The standards of decency by which he had been bound in Primus Gaudeo were no longer there. Indeed, he wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if the Vysstichi nobles didn’t crate a large market for paintings of the darker sort. With a wistful smile, he approached the receptionist after pulling out a small stack of banknotes. ”Serale, and I assure you the pleasure is mine,” he said in a smooth, quite voice tinged with a hint of perfectly false warmth. ”I’m interested in enrolling as a Journeyman in the discipline of Mysticism.”

”Excellent!” exclaimed the receptionist as he smiled enthusiastically. It was rare to see a student seeking training in the upper ranks of a sphere. Still, mystics did made him a slight bit nervous. This was, after all, Vortex. ”I’ll have a message sent to Master Iranca posthaste. Of course, if you’re not aware, you’ll need to pass an examination by the three masters.” He hmm-ed slightly as he pulled out a sheet and glanced quickly at the neat lines of text. ”If its all right for you, I’ll arrange a meeting tommorrow tonight with the three. Please come in the late evening—or after dark if you’d prefer. I’ll lead you to the room.” He scribbled a note before looking at the Kemite sheepishly. ”Er, excuse me sir, but that will be eight hundred fifty crowns.” He’d almost forgotten to ask…

Hsin pushed the small stack of banknotes across the counter to the receptionist before visibly straightening his back and clasping his hands behind his back. ”I’ll return tonight. Thank you for your time.” With a polite nod, Hsin turned and left the building

IC: The human walked through the unwelcoming streets of Vortex, his slightly heavy footfalls making a slight 'pat-pat' noise as they his the hard ground. His green eyes glanced all about, focusing in mostly on the dark shadows that hung even during the day within the dark city, his human eyes not yet used to the little light that the many vysstichi liked to keep wherever they could. That skill would come with time though, the man knew, his gaze settling on the orc that walked slightly ahead of him, the orc that was leading him to a place that he had wanted to visit since he had first entered the city and learned of it. The place where he would attempt to make his mind just as dangerous as his blade. He and his companions were each skilled in different talents, a mixture that proved deadly to an unsuspecting foe. This brightening, the human hoped to add another skill to his party's growing list. One that would make them all more dangerous then they had been for a fair while.

He glanced up to the sign naming the building as an arcane academy, registering the words with a slight smile that seemed unfitting to his normally tough demeanour. The small group followed the path, taking in the fine architecture of the building as well as the spacious area outside of it. This place seemed to be perfect for what it was being used for, making Blake wonder silently just how much a place like this would remove from one's coin purse. Quickly reaching the main door, he stood and waited as he watched the orcs hand touch lightly upon the wooden door, sliding it open with out a sound and without effort. The group of four entered, their dusty footwear falling upon the fine carpet with little care, leaving a small trail of footprints from the door behind them. In Blake's mind, the owner of the place knew that people would be coming in directly from the outside, and it was his or hers choice to place the carpet where the dirty boots would be falling after picking up a brightening worth of dirt. Why should he take any special care to avoid doing what the owner must have known would happen. His face did light up with slight amusement though as he managed to remove his eyes from the finely decorated interior to glance at his orcish companion, to see him look down at the carpet with obvious curiosity. And why wouldn't an orc be surprised when it's feet fell to the soft ground with a sound. He probably hasn't had his feet touch a carpet his life Blake thought, more then a little amused with how something taken for granted by the wealthy could easily go unknown by those that had spent their life away from crowns.

The group approached the desk where the young elf sat, the mans eyes glancing up at the portrait which hung above the poster naming the classes offered. The man's interest was caught as he observed the saurid abomination, his curiosity plaguing the human as to why that particular piece was chosen to be hung above the poster that nearly every visitor would be glancing. If it had merely been chosen as the owners favourite piece, then the man could not held but critique silently the mans peculiar taste in artistic portrait's

"Serale, boy." Blake said, waiting for the vysstichi's head to look up and his greeting to come forth from his lips. Once that greeting came, the one full of innocence with a smile to match, Blake did not hide the flash of annoyance that crossed his face as his ears registered the words. Ignorant youth. He thought, looking down upon the boy. How could he sit there and pretend that the world was fine, how could he pretend that he was happy. How could the troubles that tortured nearly every Allerian have avoided affecting the boy’s happy smile? What makes him think that he was so damn special? he thought. The human held a large respect for those that wielded the power of arcane might, and the fact that masters of that craft would choose a brat such as this to make their initial impression on their students was beyond his reasoning.

He passed those thoughts aside as his lips parted. "I seek basic training in Mystism, to be started immediately." Blake said to the boy, fishing out a banknote worth 250 crowns, some of the many that Urck had given him, and placing it into the small fingers of the child. The two males quickly sorted everything out, all of the details that needed to be taken care of quickly were, and it would be soon that Blake would add another skill to his growing list.

Making his way to the academy once again Drake couldn't not admire the architecture of the building. Walking imto the building the Giant was more nervous now then he was on the first day of schooling at the place because he knew whay he was going to ask now was a more complex and unordinary request. Well he can do it, and it probably won't be too much of a problem for him, would it? he tought as he approached the familiar receptionist. "Serale Banatarion how are you doing this morning? Still hard working at the desk I see. Anyway, say, have you seen Danvan around? I have something I wanted to ask him". Waiting anxiously for a reply he smiled down to the youngster.

"Hi there Mr. Drake!" Banatarion wore his standard smile and scooted up on the edge of his seat. Despite the summer heat he was still garbed in two or three layers of red silk -complements of his grandfather Ardanon- and a black pair of trousers. The adolescent didn't appear overly bored but nor did he seem entirely thrilled with his job either. His grandfather had told him that he'd been too young to go adventuring with the adults and thus he had been forced to remain here in Vortex. It wasn't a boring and purposeless life, but it wasn't exactly fulfilling either.

"Yeah, I'll be all summer. My master says that I have to stay here and learn discipline until I'm at least seventy patterns." the Vysstichi boy grumbled and shook his head in disappointment. Nonetheless, he soon wiped away this facade and offered a grin as Drake pressed his inquiry, "Sure thing. Master Danvan is in the study room. Take the door to my left and he'll probably be in there. If not I could always leave him a message." the Vysstichi jabbed a slender finger towards a passage on the side of the room.

OOC: Beh, my post got deleted on the way or something. I hate that.

IC:
Thinking about the fact that Benetarion had to stay at work all summer, until he was seventy patterns old even, made Drake feel a little sorry for him. Preparing for this coming vacation was a thing Drake took great pleasure in doing and that was what he was doing in the academy now, travel arrangements. Although thinking about the subject again the Giant figured that the dark elf could spend centuries out adventuring while he was long dead, staying indoors while such a lovely weather was out there did not seem to make sense. "Well, discipline is something worth learning, I wish I had seventy patterns to do that and still have my whole life infront of me, but alas I would probably die in two hundred patterns or so, maybe even less if I will get some people angry".

Sighing the Giant listened to the youngsters words. Looking at the door to the left of the kid Drake nodded. "Will do, and thank you. Since I won't be passing from here if Danvan is indeed there I guess I'll bid you farewell until I'll have money and time to deepen my knowledge in the art of Sorcery". He smiled at the dark elf one last time and headed toward the indicated door. Knocking on the door twice before entering he made a small prayer to Maj that his former teacher would accept his request. Entering the room Drake's eyes sprinted accross it, searching for the Vysstichi while trying to capture the magnificant works of art that were scattered throughout the academy.

"Only two hundred?" the Vysstichi boy wore a dazzled expression upon his face as he considered the relatively 'short' lifespan of the giant. In comparison to the dark elves, every race didn't live too long, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Banatarion's uncle, Ardanon, was almost in his seventh century and the horrible memories that he'd experienced would continue to haunt him forever. Banatarion had occasionally stumbled upon his uncle in the middle of the night, tossing and turning at the unpleasant recollections. Banatarion smirked at the thought. He never wanted to become like this. "I suggest that you live them well then, Mister Drake." the adolescent beamed and leaned forward as he listened to what the giant had to say.

"You won't find him there, my student." A familiar voice from behind caught the giant's attention. Banatarion's eyes drifted behind the massive giant and the brilliant shine of amusement foretold the presence of Drake's master. "He's right here." the elder Vysstichi cackled and stepped into the room. His aged face and older features were noticeable, though he did his best to maintain the demeanor of a youth. Adorned in flowing purple robes, the sorcerer gradually waded into the room until standing before the large giant. While only a puny dot in comparison to the mighty humanoid, there was no doubt about the power that radiated from the sorcerer's physique, "So, tell me, how can I help you this brightening? Have you come to pursue more knowledge? Or something else?"

Drake Stormbringer is an upstanding Citizen
Hearing the voice coming from behind him Drake's face lit up. Although the time Danvan and himself had spent together, Drake learned to respect his teacher, and grew quite fond of him in the short time. With a swish of his clothes and a couple of pretty loud thumps he turned his massive body, slowly facing the Sorceror with a smile. Looking at the rich garments that wrapped the radient Vysstichi, Drake couldn't help but feeling a little jealous, knowing very well that most likely, he would not be able to be afford things half as nice as the ones Danvan was wearing. Sighing silently Drake looked at his master and listened to his question, indeed feeling rather inferior inspite of the fact that he was more than five time taller than the dark elf.

"No I'm afraid I can't afford more knowledge at this point, although I crave for it. But don't you worry Master Danvan, you haven't seen the last of me" smiling nervously Drake decided to get to the point. "What I am here about would be cheaper than that, or so I hope. I have been planning to go on small vacation. Of course I don't have to worry about getting back from there thanks to the Gate, although getting there proves to be problematic. If I go by foot over the mountains I would not have time for the vacation". Sighing a little he finally asked what he was there to ask "Would you consider teleporting me?"

The Master of Sorcery was not at all astonished by the sight of his latest student. Drake Stormbringer had been a fine addition to the dracon's class, though one of the rarer types of initiatives that Danvan had taken on. Nonetheless, the disguised Vysstichi had earnestly accepted that not all of his students would be Vysstichi or Esh'lahier. Though Danvan's aspirations revolved around the prospect of uniting the two elven races, so too did he desire to destroy the barriers that prevented them from having equality with everyone else. Drake had been one of the first giants that he had ever come to know personally -and not on the opposing end of a battle- but already he could tell that this experience had been edifying as it helped him to remember that giants too were often considered outside the circles of friendship.

"Teleporting you?" the dark elf quirked a silver brow and folded his hands together. For a moment it appeared as though he considered the idea outrageous, but after glancing upwards to the gigantic humanoid he broke into a hearty chuckle. "I suppose that I could, though I'm surprised that your long legs aren't up to the tsak of making the journey yourself. Nonetheless, where did you have in mind? Even I have limits my friend." the sorcerer grinned.

ooc: Another self-modded post again from the NPC Blake's point of view.

ic: For somebody in Blake's occupation training was a definite need. You had to be strong and that was the simple truth and if you weren't you were dead. For somebody with Blake's personality though, training was essential. It was why he lived and why he continued living, the desire to make himself as dangerous as he possibly could overwhelming any desire to cease his constant work and simply settle down. His quickly growing list of skills and talents would never stop growing until he was dead by natural causes or by the sword it did not matter. All that mattered was training in as much as he possibly could and it was that kind of complete determination that nearly bordered upon madness that had gotten him into one of the best positions he could ask for. True, he was currently being lead around by an orc, but that did not matter to him when he considered the benefits serving somebody offered him. The wealth that was shared amongst the three partners and there leader was nice, and the glory that they were all convinced would come to them was welcomed, but the true reason that he stayed with them was because the orc he followed had a way of knowing exactly what everybody wanted. The orc had seen the man's obsession and had taken advantage. Blake's leader paid for all of his expensive training classes that he would otherwise not be able to afford so that he could continue on with the odd obsession and all he had to do was follow some orders. An arrangement that the human was more then happy to abide by for often the orders given to him proved to be the best ways to test out his newly acquired skills.

The man's narrowed eyes glanced down at the winding pathway where his feet now fell. The rhythmic tapping of boot on ground made his mind drift and wander, beginning to ponder ove
