"As of now, I have no want for any normal job as part of running the city or the like? Possibly if you need something taken care of personally, I could help you." Kalenel spoke his words truthfully and slyly, flashing his handsome at the finish for the added touch.
"I could possibly keep an eye out for you while you act as Thane, make sure the local gangs don't get too confident." Kalenel spoke softly, not wanting this part of the conversation to be overheard. Amber, by now, could surely tell that Kalenel were no saint. But perhaps she could use someonle like the rogue, who knew the ins and outs of the Vortex and Har'oloth better than most.

“Keep an eye on the gangs?” She rubbed her chin as she thought about it. “The guards already have their own men for that and I’ve got some people I know around these parts too.” And with ‘guards’ she didn’t mean the guards patrolling the area. The Owls had come to life around the same time as the Blood Alley Gang was destroyed and they were supposed to be an elite unit that did undercover. No doubt they’d have a few people keeping tabs on the Southern Quarter. “You would have to go and see the Captain of the Guard if you’re interested in keeping an eye out.”
“Which is not to say you couldn’t work for me…” The words seemed to be addressed to herself more then to Kalenel. The pensive look disappeared from her face she and smiled brightly at the Vysstichi. “Does the name Dimitri Wladisyaw ring a bell?” Having been a citizen of Vortex that long, the name Wladisyaw would be familiar enough. The old Duke had governed the city for quite some time until he was murdered. Even though his bastard son was somewhat less known, many inhabitants of the Southern Quarter would have picked up the name of the previous Captain of the Guard for various reasons. Either because they had been sent to his jails or because they picked up the rumour of his arrest by Imperials, maybe they had even been approached for less exemplary job offers. His arrest hadn’t been undeserved after all.

"Somewhat..."
Kalenel had heard of him, knew he held some positon within the city. Kalenel tended to stay out of the buisness of the city, and in turned hoped they did the same. Nonetheless, Kalenel would pursue further.
"What of him?"

“Well, he was the previous Captain of the Guard. When I hired him I knew that he might cause me trouble in the end, but at the time he was the only person available to me that could get the job with straightening out the guards.” And with him at the top corruption had gone down and the guards had started doing there job properly. Not that they had become an exemplary force, but there had been sufficient improvement to be happy about it.
“And just as I thought, he did cause me trouble when he was arrested last winter by Imperials. While his replacement if far less likely to pull off something similar, I might perhaps not be a bad idea to have an alternative way to keep tabs on what was is going on with the Guard.” She suspected that Drovold, the current Captain of the Guard still held contact with the escaped Dimitri for example. It would be interesting to find out exactly how much was happening behind her back.
She paused again and waited for an answer, looking to see if he was interested her proposal before making a concrete offer.

Kalenel wanted badly to let out a smile as he saw what Amber was getting at, but held it in to maintain his character. He had indeed heard about the arrest, and cared nothing of it until now.
"You are a wise Thane..." Kalenel said with a smile, in a apparent serious tone. She had not let her position blur her vision and had not let her guard down. Which is essential in Vortex, for enemies may strike from any angle.
"Perhaps I can be of your personal service then?" Kalenel said with a smile, showing his apparent interest.

“Well, like I said, it might be useful to have an alternative source of information in the guards. Not that I don’t trust the current Captain or that he’s not doing a good job, but I’m suspecting I don’t know everything I could.” More accurately, she suspected there were still ties with the escaped previous Captain and she’d liked to have a man on the inside in case something happened like another batch of Imperials showing up.
“So if you join the guard, either the regular ones or to act undercover in the Southern Quarter, and try to keep an ear open for everything that’s happening then perhaps I could, oh say… double the pay you get in exchange for regular updates on anything you think I should know.” She paused for a second to let it sink in. “It probably won’t be much in the lower ranks, but then you probably won’t have much to report either.”

"I could never be part of the Guard my Thane, I am sorry." Kalenel spoke with a smile as he leaned back again into his chair. Kalenel loved controversy, was a fan of the oppositon of others and loved being the one manipulating from the outside. But he could never play the part of a guard, it was something he just wouldn't do.
"So what do you have planned for the City?

“Oh well.” She shrugged. She hadn’t suspected him to join the regular guards, but she thought the Owls might more of his liking since that involved spying and such. Part of there job was doing exactly what he had proposed to do for her. Probably not there most important job though. Knowing Dimitri a little he would most likely have put their focus mostly below ground and from what she had seen from Drovold, the current Captain of the Guard little would have been changed.
“Not much on the agenda right now and I’m not complaining. Things are going smoothly for a change and that make the job easier.” She looked thoughtfully for a moment. “There’s a forum on the province and it’s role in the Empire near the end of the season in Nexus Prime. That could be interesting since from what I’ve gathered, the general feeling seems to be that the Empire doesn’t do much more then eat a lot of crowns.” She grinned. It was yet to be seen if it wouldn’t be a lot of barking and little biting, but it would be interesting nonetheless. “It’s open for public, though I doubt you care much.” She hadn’t cared much for politics either until she became Thane, especially outside of Vortex.
