Archery Training. (Need Mod

Nevaraon followed the shop keepers instructions to the archery trainer, after purchasing the Yew Bow and two dozen arrows. He walked to the range and looked around for the trainer.

There was a young man working with a long bow at a distance from the targets, though he looked up when Nevaraon came out onto the range. He fired off his arrow, watching with satisfaction as it embedded itself into the center of the round target. He didn't look particularly old, barely a young man. He was a pretty typical-looking Kemite, with black hair and dark brown eyes with olive skin.

"Can I help you?"

OOCWhat kind of bow is this? :) Long/short?

"Serale, I am Nevaraon. I heard that you were the greatest archery teacher around. I would like to learn the art of firing a bow." Nevaraon said with a bow. "If you would take me as a student, I would be honored."

The instructor studied him. "Hm. I might be convinced yet. What sort of bow do you have?" he glanced at Nevaraon's weapon. "There are a number of different types, after all. Can you recognize the difference between a long or short bow?"

Nevaraon presented his bow to his hopeful teacher. "It's a yew shortbow, I believe."

"So it is," the young man nodded. "So it is. What's your name?" he eyed the newcomer as he held the tip of his longbow against the ground and removed the string, putting the string into a sash he wore, and set the bow aside. He picked up a much smaller one, a gleaming black weapon.

"My name is Nevaraon Darkmidnight." Nevaraon replied. "I'm ready to do whatever is required to learn the art of ranged combat."

The young man nodded, testing the weight of his own black short bow. "I take it you've never had one, much less used it, before? Then we'll start with the basics. Stringing." He pulled another string from the red sash he wore. "I'll show you how we string and unstring, and then you can practice stringing on yours, once you unstring it. My name, by the way, is Huyu."

"Now. To string a bow, we take the string--yours is already strung, as you can see--and loop it over one end," Huyu demonstrated, "and put that end against the ground, and apply a bit of weight, just enough to allow you to take the other end of the string and loop it like we did the first." He held up his now-string weapon.

"As for unstringing, same-basic principle. Try to unstring your bow."

Nevaraon nodded his understanding as he watched Huyu string the bow. When he was asked to unstring his bow, Nevaraon set his bow on the ground and applied a little bit of pressure at a time till he could pull off the loop from his bow. "Like this?"

"Just like that," Huyu agreed. "Now you can restring it, and we'll begin." He opened the shed, and gathered two quiverfuls of arrows. Once Nevaraon had finished stringing his bow, Huyu handed him a quiver.

"No point in wasting yours. Take an arrow. To string it, lay it carefully on the carved holder and the string," Huyu demonstrated, fitting the arrow into place.

Nevaraon imitated Huyu's actions. "Just like this?" then he asked, "Is there much difference in firing a long bow and a short bow?"

"Like that," Huyu agreed. "And there is. You'll soon see. Draw your string back, holding the arrow in position, and when I tell you, fire," the Kemite instructed him. He drew his own string back, and fired at the target. The arrow slammed into the bullseye. "I want you to aim at the target to the left of the one that I just hit," he told Nevaraon. "Fire."

"There is indeed. Longbows are much more powerful weapons. Bigger, more of a range. Shortbow, on the other hand, are meant for close-range, and are incredibly flexible and dangerous up close."

Nevaraon followed Huyu's instructions. He lined the arrow up with the target down range, just left of the one Huyu shot. Nevaraon aimed, took a deep breath, and released the arrow and his breath at the same time. Wether or not he hit the target, Nevaraon turned to Huyu and listened.

"So a shortbow would be better if you intend to start an attack with it, and drop it when the enemy closes? While the longbow would better suited to someone who has back-up?

The arrow soared through the air and hit the grass short of the target. "Not bad for your first shot," Huyu told him. "Next time, breathe out as you release - it'll give you more power behind the arrow, and your muscles will relax a little, which means less resistance," he advised and listened to the question.

"Shortbows are better for up-close attacks. Longbow is for distance. Say you're on the walls of Zinn'Sunn like a Satinishi. They use a shortbow to attack those near the walls. An archer using a longbow would be more like rangers attacking those on the walls from below and out of range."

"Now, try again. Focus on the target. Don't look at your surroundings. There's the target, and then there's you. Fire when ready."
